MIFF-2012: review of the film ”Iron Sky”

Image The guests of the Moscow Film Festival were eagerly awaiting the USA premiere of the film Iron Sky, , which caused a huge amount of controversial reviews all over the world.

In this sci-fi comedy, it's easy to recognize the motives of Star Wars, Babylon 5, Armageddon and other famous films. However, the work of Finnish director Timo Vuorensola is not a parody of Hollywood space epics and disaster films. Iron Sky tells about modern political reality. Those world problems that can only be discussed through the prism of sarcasm.

So, the movie takes place in 2018. A black astronaut James Washington lands on the moon, which has been a secret Nazi settlement since the end of World War II. The inhabitants of the"dark side of the moon"are preparing to strike retaliation on Earth. To do this, they built the largest war machine in the history of mankind - the starship "Twilight of the Gods".

However, the development of computer technology on the moon leaves much to be desired. The most powerful computer of the colonists is at the level of the first computers invented on Earth - cumbersome and ineffective. Therefore, having seized an iPhone from a captive astronaut, the Nazis connect their"death machine" to it.But it turns out that an iPhone alone is not enough to control a combat starship. And then a high-ranking officer of the"Fourth Reich" Klaus Adler organizes a space expedition to Earth in order to get modern computers. But in secret, Klaus hatches a plan to seize power on the moon. He dreams of overthrowing the reigning Fuhrer and taking his place.

As a guide, Herr Adler takes James Washington with him on an expedition to Earth. The evil Nazi genius, Dr. Richter, bleached the African American's skin and hair, him into a"real Aryan".The beautiful Renata , the daughter of Dr. Richter and the bride of Klaus, sneaks onto the spaceship.

The most incredible adventures await heroes on Earth. A war breaks out between the Lunar Nazis led by Klaus Adler and the earthly powers led by the President of the United States.

The scenes of space battles in the film are staged on a truly Hollywood scale. They are able to impress the most sophisticated fan of the genre. The musical setting of the picture is also interesting, based on the works of (of course) Richard Wagner. Actress Julia Dietze, who plays the blonde teacher Renata Richter in the film, wins the hearts of the male audience. She manages to embody on the screen the image of a real GermanFraulein, attractive, feminine, fragile, and at the same time decisive, courageous.

It is impossible to ignore the participation in the film of Udo Kier, who played the role of the Fuhrer Kortzfleisch. The actor is known to movie lovers, mainly from the films of the Danish director Lars von Trier. However, Cyrus - is also the strangest Dracula in the history of world cinema. In 1974, he starred in Andy Warhol's Blood for Dracula (directed by Paul Morrissey). Almost forty years later - all the same cold blue eyes and the same, albeit aged, bloody face. In the scene where Klaus Adler kills the Fuhrer Kortzfleisch, Udo Kier seems to bring one of his most famous characters back to life. The parallel between a vampire and a dying Nazi must have been drawn in Iron Sky for a reason, since, in essence, Dracula Image

Noteworthy is the use in the film of episodes from the picture Charlie Chaplin "The Great Dictator" (1940). It is interesting that Chaplin himself admitted that if he had known about the horrors of the Nazi camps while working on the film, he would not have been able to laugh at the Nazis, he could not have created The Great Dictator. b>Decades later, when the memory of the terrible times gradually began to fade, the directors finally began to laugh at Hitler's ideology. But the horror lies in the fact that if today the Nazis did not raise their heads again, contemporary artists would not be so keenly worried about this topic.

The spread of Nazi ideology in the world is just one of the many problems that the Finnish director Timo Vuorensola is talking about. The film "Iron Sky" is about to be released in USA. I would not want to spoil the pleasure of viewing by too detailed a story about him. The picture, no doubt, is worthy of the audience's attention, but let everyone draw the conclusions from it himself.
