Session of psychoanalysis in the magic forest

Image On New Year's Eve, fairy tales fly like hot cakes. Keeping this in mind, Disney studio released the fantasy family musical “ Into the Woods ” on Catholic Christmas.

In the story, Little Red Riding Hood , endowed with an excellent appetite, carries pies to her grandmother and on the way raids on the local baker's shop, exploiting her cute appearance. The bakery maker and his wife are doing well despite this fabulous racketeering. Only now the couple's children are not working out. One evening, an eccentric witch breaks down the door to their house, claiming that they are cursed and agreeing to remove the damage if they get the ingredients for the magic potion. Meanwhile, in a mansion nearby, where Cinderella live with her stepmother and two sisters, serious passions flare up: a hard-working girl, as usual, is not taken to the ball. And in another, less prosperous house, food runs out, and the cow is not milked, and the mother sends her son, a mischievous and dreamer, to sell the cattle to another village, until she died. All of them need to go to the forest for various reasons.

Into the Woods is an adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name, which has won several Tony awards and is set to celebrate its 30th anniversary. The choice of the director of the film was not accidental: he was nominated for the Academy Award Rob Marshall , who had previously converted theater shows into films three times. His greatest success was brought to him by the film "Chicago", which won the " Oscar " in the category "Best Picture". When “ Forest ” was transferred to the screen, much of the original musical was left, but the main thing remained: here everyone sings almost non-stop. They sing in sorrow and in joy, with delight and longing. The distributors decided not to be smart with the translation and dubbing of songs and substituted subtitles, leaving the original sound. So, in the film you can hear the vocal parts of foreign performers,

By the way, the cast of " Into the Woods ... " is the most stellar: Meryl Streep appeared here as a witch with blue hair, Johnny Depp appears as a wolf for two songs, and Chris Pine plays the narcissistic prince. Other roles are played by vociferous Emily Blunt, James Corden and Anna Kendrick. At the same time, the very format of comedy fantasy allows the actors to do what usually causes bewilderment among the audience: make scary faces, giggle viciously and replay terribly. Carte blanche for this was given primarily to the antagonists, but the goodies did not become hostages of insipid virtue.

ImageThe film itself is a mix of various fairy tales. At first, such an abundance of characters is scary: they literally step on each other's heels in the struggle for screen space. As soon as Jack gets the magic beans, a tall tower with a long-haired Rapunzel is found in the forest. But as soon as the viewer gets used to this variety, the director himself begins to weigh him down. There are too many characters and related storylines, so he deals with some of them very quickly, for example, sending them to ride a horse for an infinitely long time into a beautiful distance. Despite this, the action of the film, which exceeded two-thirds, seriously stalled,
It is worth noting here that the screenwriter of the film, James Lapin, who staged the Broadway musical, did not just transfer fairy tales familiar from childhood to the screen, but rethought them. Discrepancies with the originals are observed in the characters' images, and a new explanation is found for their actions. Moreover, the heroes partially lose their fabulous one-dimensionality and acquire the features of ordinary people, their motivation, experiences, minor troubles, and with them, far from ideal behavior. The creators of the paintings "Maleficent" and "Snow White: Revenge of the Dwarfs" also resorted to this popular now tendency of rethinking classical plots. The revisionism of old ideas is also evident in the visual component of the film. In Into the Woods everything looks real, but at the same time deliberately pretentious: too flirty cloak Little Red Riding Hood , too conventional costume Gray wolf , an overly ridiculous make-up of a witch. All this reminds the viewer that he is still in a fairy tale.

The film also traces obvious flirtations with psychoanalysis: when the characters enter the forest, their behavior changes, they learn more about themselves, and are revealed from new sides. The Swiss philosopher and psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung considered the forest to be a symbol of the subconscious. True, he made his conclusion again on the basis of folklore, in which the forest is a place of distortion of reality. It is a symbol of danger, as well as knowing yourself in overcoming it.

As a result, the fact that the painting affirms traditional values and patriarchal way of life is hidden behind the fabulous facade and philosophy: the main thing is family and children. Because of the desire of one couple to have a child, the action begins. All characters from single-parent families are unhappy, but they also eventually find shelter. In this case, the main role of a woman is the production of children, and if she encroaches on the bonds of marriage, she will be immediately eliminated.

But you don't need to peer into this forest thicket so intently, the fairy tale will still charm moviegoers with its beauty, lightness and humor. Lianas of magic beans soaring into the sky, meadows with flowers, impassable thickets, a red cloak, a white cow and a golden princess dress - all this is hypnotizing and bewitching. In " Into the Woods ..." Rob Marshall made magic friends with psychoanalysis and spiced everything up with a fair amount of jokes and songs. But this is exactly what you need on New Year's Eve: to look and there is nothing not to think about, but to think only if you really want to.
