Review of the movie Into the Woods .... Tales in the Woods

The further into the forest, the more firewood. This saying fits both the name and the character of the new full-length project from the Disney studio more than ever. The degree of suspense in it is maintained at an unusually high level for children's fairy tales. Even though the creators cut the woods and failed to organically reconcile theatricality with cinematography, the musical turned out to be expectedly interesting, but unexpectedly deep, witty and, in the best sense, gloomy. This is how the Brothers Grimm bequeathed their fairy tales to us.

This is undoubtedly the most successful of the latest movies by Rob Marshall. Not as tiringly faceless as “ Pirates of the Caribbean 4 ” and not as comically bad as 'Nine'. Let and to the level of “ Chicago ” it falls short. Marshall made good use of his few talents, organically weaving direction into the movie's construction, but not perfecting the source material with it. The biggest plus – it is an inventive combination of fairy-tale characters with thoughtful lyrics of Stephen Sondheim's songs and masterful acting work that never ceases to impress.

Meryl Streep is at the forefront as always. Simply because her incredible talent immediately overshadows all others as soon as she appears on screen. She can be both funny and serious with equal success, developing a phenomenal range of emotions and feelings in her songs and instantly pushing the movie to a completely different level.

Only Emily Blunt, for whom 2014 may be a key year in her career, and James Corden, manage not to get lost next to her, an actor among other things theatrical. Together they make up not only a bright emotional core of the story, but also a married couple of bakers who are easy to believe. The viewer travels through a forest full of fairy tales with real and down-to-earth people, seemingly equally surprised by the events taking place.

On the contrary, it turns out to be easy to outshine Anna Kendrick, who turned out to be too plain for Cinderella. Kendrick is a very theatrical actress and sometimes this theatricality emphasized by the director does not quite have a positive effect. How well some songs are included in the general canvas of the story, not slowing it down, but on the contrary moving forward and revealing the characters, just as some performances turn out to be pretentious, inhibited and repetitive. From this, the movie itself sometimes sags under the weight of information and becomes boring while waiting for the action to flood the screen again.

Rob Marshall's general manner of presenting some episodes directly refers to the stage, which cannot but distract. And the light, and the scenery, and the construction of the frame sometimes directly shout that this was exactly how it was on Broadway. This will invariably draw out non-singing lovers and make them think about the correct decision to come to the cinema.

However, in the end “ The further into the woods ” costs both time and money. Chris Pine as a new rendition of Prince Charming, hilarious episodes with Cinderella's stepmother and sisters, amazing theatrical talents Tracey Ullman and Billy Magnussen, the general uniqueness of the musical and even the familiar Johnny Depp make you touch your favorite stories and look at them from a new perspective.

Moreover, the story in `` The further into the woods ... '' deals with much more serious topics than one would expect from a children's movie. There is death, moderate cruelty, and the truthfulness of the real world. Things that many would prefer to protect their children from, but nevertheless presented in a form that will be remembered, but will not affect the delicate psyche. And for adults, there are some very witty and unexpected jokes in store.

Simply put, “ The further into the woods ... ” - this is perhaps the most successful New Year movie for the whole family. Must be serious, must be fabulous with a proper, interesting message and tons of amazing characters and plot twists. A spectacle of Hollywood proportions, in which everyone will have something to their liking. You will be entertained, you will be sung, danced and told a story that you have never heard anywhere else. A story about a magical forest.
