Armless, legless, eyeless. Review of ”Venom”

Image Remember the most dramatic moment from the Venom trailer? When the titular symbiote with the eyes of rapper Aljay carnivore promised the following to a petty thug:"We will eat your hands, then your legs, and then we will rip your face off the shard, and you will turn into an armless, legless, eyeless poop hanging out in the sewers"< / i>. So, the film itself seems to personify a realized threat - it is an armless (no script), legless (no acting), faceless (unmemorable) waste product of a Hollywood film conveyor. And he can surprise only those who have never seen a "poop" in their life or have not watched a good superhero movie, so that there is something to compare with.

Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is a hyperactive reporter who every day manages to visit all the hot spots of the city on his motorcycle and air a series of mind-blowing reports. Having received the task to interview the head of the bioengineering corporation Carlton Drake (Reese Ahmed) with a warning not to go where they are not asked, he immediately, of course, climbs and discovers such sensational information that he cannot sleep well. Attempts to get to the bottom of the truth lead to the fact that the guy flies from work, loses his girlfriend and finds himself vegetating on the sidelines of life.

At the moment when Eddie has already met all the homeless people in the area and almost starved his ficus, one of Drake's employees appears on the horizon. The woman invites him on a secret night tour of the corporation's laboratory so that Brock can see the lawlessness happening there with his own eyes and finally tell the world about it. It is there that Eddie catches some kind of "infection", which soon begins to speak to him in an impudent hoarse voice, and then completely turns the life of a former reporter into alien dances with chases violating the laws of gravity, tearing off human heads and merry jumps across skyscrapers.

ImageActually, only for these races and chases in the film "Venom" and you can watch without regret for the money spent on the ticket. The special effects are really inventive and rich, but everything else here is so predictable that if you play "drink every time you guess the plot move or notice a plot hole", by the end you will get into the state of that symbiote.

The filmmakers amputated not only the intrigue, but also the notorious chemistry between the main characters. A combination of actors such as Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams could have lit a blazing fire of love to the sky, but the result was just a smoldering speck. Perhaps, this is due to the ridiculous, matryoshka-like wig given to the actress, or the dialogues saturated with molasses of ladies' novels.

At the same time, it seems that Tom Hardy deliberately made Eddie Brock so dashing and silly in order to yield the first violin to his black master. The charisma of Venom, who gets offended when he is called a parasite and tries to bite off someone's head all the time, clearly outweighs the charisma of a failed reporter. And even Hardy's trademark grunt, his almost calling card and a win-win way to demonstrate his rude masculinity, amid Venom's bloodthirsty remarks, lost his charm. And at the moment when Brock, fleeing pursuit in the forest, climbed onto a tall pine tree and grabbed it with all limbs, for some reason Winnie the Pooh and his"I am a cloud, a cloud a cloud, and not a bear".

The most appropriate word to describe the motivation of the main antagonist is "indistinct". Drake, suffering from a God complex, has not quite decided on what to direct his villainous potential to, but somehow it is necessary to frighten the audience. Therefore, he reasonably talks about the well-known biblical story, experiments on rabbits and homeless people, tyrannies fawning at him employees and, in the end, having acquired a personal symbiote, tries to leave the Earth. In terms of stardom and fame, Reese Ahmed is still slightly inferior to Tom and Michelle, but his talent did not succeed here either. So if you do not know anything about this Briton with interesting Pakistani roots, but want to appreciate him as an actor at his true worth, watch it better not "Venom", but "Stringer" or the black comedy "Four Lions".

ImageDuring the viewing, the feeling that the most interesting remains behind the scenes does not leave. For example, the development of the concept of two losers - terrestrial and alien, who decided that on Earth, and even in the body of such a gallant Winnie the Pooh, will come, as they say, to success. Or, say, a new round in the relationship between Eddie and his girlfriend, for which Venom could become a kind of family therapist and productive sex coach. In general, everything that the wild fantasy of director Ruben Fleischer, who presented us with the unforgettable "Welcome to Zombieland", could have spawned, was not shown in the cinema.

It seems that the now announced change from an adult rating to a child rating in blockbusters about alien monsters means not only the amputation of all important limbs of the film, but also its castration. And the phantom pain from these wounds was felt at the premiere of "Venom" by viewers of both sexes.
