The FBI is investigating a series of sophisticated murders. The suspect, named Buffalo Bill , rips the skin off his victims. The investigation comes to a complete dead end, and the FBI decides to take an extreme step - to consult with the cannibal killer Dr. Lecter sitting in prison. There is a possibility that the former psychiatrist may have something to say about the suspect ...  A young intern from the FBI Academy Clarice Starling is sent to Dr. Lecter . And something happens - the doctor's psychological games with Clarice create a kind of strange connection between them. Dr. Lecter meets a worthy rival in his emotional pursuits. And this begins to work in favor of the investigation. But not without collateral damage.  In 1990, Orion Pictures filmed the film adaptation of Thomas Harris's bestseller The Silence of the Lambs.  After much thought, the studio bosses entrusted the filming to director Jonathan Demme, who had previously made several good films and a very successful comedy "Married to the Mafia".The casting was pretty difficult. Demme for the role of Clarice wanted to get Michelle Pfeiffer, with whom he had already worked. But Michelle refused, citing the cruelty of the plot. And then they invited Jodie Foster, under which, in fact, the screenwriter Ted Tolly wrote the adaptation. The choice of actor for the role of Dr. Lecter was even more rigid. Many years later, Demme admitted that he seriously considered only two candidates - Daniel Day-Lewis and Anthony Hopkins. The role went to the second. Another famous actor in the film was Scott Glenn, who played Jack Crawford . The film The Silence of the Lambs was released in 1991.  With a budget of $ 19 million, the picture earned more than $ 130 million only at the US box office .However, the professional achievement was the victory in five main nominations for Oscars -Best Film,Best Director,Best Actress,Best ActorandBest Adapted Screenplay. It was the third film in history that did this, and since then the record has not been broken. Among the film's many awards is the victory of Jonathan Demme at the Berlin Film Festival. The thriller The Silence of the Lambs is also listed on the US National Film Register as a film of great cultural, historical or aesthetic significance. Subsequently, several more films were made about Dr. Lecter with Anthony Hopkins in the title role, but none of them came close to the success of the first. The fact is that in subsequent films there was no Jodie Foster and this extraordinary chemistry between Clarice and Hannibal Lecter .  The main thing in The Silence of the Lambs is not a detective component. Undoubtedly, the plot itself captured and did not let go for a minute, but still the main thing was not when, where and how they would catch Buffalo Bill - we always know that the criminal will be caught. And it's not that this film has been repeatedly called the best thriller in the history of cinema - we have seen many similar projects before and after it.  It was an extraordinary duet - Clarice and Hannibal Lecter . This is exactlytheirhistory. But not a story of love, friendship or, as it might seem, cooperation. It is a history of relationships that defy categorization. Something at some transcendent emotional level, at the subconscious level. Affection that is not defined in terms. Both Jodie Foster and Sir Anthony Hopkins played just like magic. It so happened that with "Silence of the Lambs" , the stellar career of the already middle-aged Anthony Hopkins began. And young Jody had already become a star with one Oscar by that time. But, most likely, the role of Clarice will remain the strongest in her career.  The final scene, when Dr. Lecter calls Clarice right at the banquet at the FBI ... He's out on a new hunt. The worried face of Clarice , but who is she worried about - the hunter or the victim? The last words of Dr. Lecter on the phone:"It is not my plans to meet with you, Clarice - the world is more interesting when there are people like you"< / i>. And if it were not about Dr. Lecter , then his words could be regarded as a confession.  And we have been watching The Silence of the Lambs for more than twenty years, because the world is more interesting when there is a duet of FBI agent Clarice and Dr. Lecter , one of the most charming monsters in the history of cinema.
