”Is it because of the suit ...”: a review of the film ”Parade”

Image Parade by the Serbian director Srdjan Dragojevic is equally playful about the“Serbian problem”and the hardships of theLGBTcommunity. So people without a sense of humor, who salivate at the mere mention of gays or the Balkans, do not have to watch this film in order to avoid the effect known asbutthurt. For example, a festival audience whose heart » has already been won, this joke went with a bang:

- Tell me, do you know who sex minorities are?
- I know! It's you Serbs!

Dragoevich, not particularly embarrassed, but not overstepping, ridicules both the stereotypes of machismo opposing the gay community and homosexuals themselves, their tender love for opera music, yoga and ruffles. The characters are deliberately caricatured, so all claims to the director regarding their implausibility can be considered untenable.

The official synopsis says that Parade is the story of two Belgrade gays who, despite all the humiliation and persecution, dream of organizing the first real gay parade. In fact, this is the story of a brutal straight Limun (Nicola Coyo), who, for the sake of love for his"whore with a heart of gold"and at her own urgent request, promises to assemble a team strong men to protect their parade from the militant neo-Nazis. The drama of the situation is added by the fact that on the other side of the barricades is his own, shaved head, son.

ImageNot finding support in the circle of my friends, who turned out to get involved in this< i>"zapadlo", Limun uses ingenuity and calls for help from those who will just be happy to"play squash with Serbs in the city center".Their own fighting comrades ready to poke on anyone their friend points out. As a result, Limun assembledthe "magnificent seven",which, among others, include: a Croat, a Bosnian, a Kosovar and his fighting lover, to protect a handful of gays from a horde of neo-Nazis:

- Let's just finish it quickly, otherwise I parked my car badly.

This is how the mischievous and slightly grotesque comedy culminates in a battle scene, made in the best traditions of Braveheart, and suddenly turns into a real drama. The viewer laughed for 80 minutes, and on the 81st he cried ...

What do gays themselves think about Parade? It is generally believed that the most sex-minority-friendly country of all the former Yugoslavia is Slovenia, where gay pride parades are held regularly, while Serbia and Croatia is a homophobic country.

ImageTherefore, the very fact of the appearance of "Parade" - already an act for which Dragoevich many Balkan homosexuals are ready to bow down in the belt. Moreover, according to some gays, they were the ones who laughed the loudest in the theaters, since not all“internal jokes”were addressed and understood by straight people. There were also a lot of offended people, especially among the war veterans, who did not like the light in which the director showed them and where he putto “work”.

Of course, "Parade" is a bit idealistic, but for a film designed to give hope, it is forgivable, and opening sores and picking abscesses is the task of other genres. And, of course, "Parade" is not so much and not only about gays and for them, it is also a heartfelt greetings to all residents of the former Yugoslavia.
