They fought for their homeland. Review of ”28 Panfilovites”

Image It is done. Eight years have passed from the moment the idea of the script appeared to the premiere of the film " 28 Panfilov's men ". Long term. For such a long time, unfulfilled expectations tend to crumble to dust. But this project has a loyal audience and is now more than rewarded for waiting. Because this picture is a victory. The victory of honest, intelligible, meaningful art over that unnamed, which makes up the lion's share of USA film production from the period of modern history.

November 1941. The operation of the German fascist invaders "Typhoon" - the attack on Moscow - is in full swing. At the Dubosekovo junction, 117 kilometers from the capital, the fourth company of the second battalion of the 1075th rifle regiment of the 316th rifle division of Major General Ivan Panfilov engages in battle with many times superior enemy forces, is killed almost in full , but stops the advance of German tanks.

Actually, this fragment of a dry military summary is the plot. “We are making a movie about a tank battle,” said the scriptwriter and director Andrei Shaliopa in an interview. And he did not deceive: we have one detailed, amazingly filmed winter tank battle and preparations for it. Nothing extra. Briefly and to the point. That is why, in terms of its impact, the film is similar to the best examples of the Soviet military drama. And in USA cinema about the Great Patriotic War, there was simply nothing like this. The authors have created a precedent, a standard, which, no matter how pretentious it sounds, will henceforth, if not equal, then certainly turn around.

Moreover, it cannot be called the standard of exclusively patriotic cinema. Among other things, “ 28 ” is a simple example of a perfect movie. A huge painstaking work is behind every frame, every note, every dialogue. Now films do not disagree on quotations, but in Soviet times " 28 " would have sold out by all means: the script basis of the sample is the highest. Mikhail Kostylev wrote beautiful, chilling, strict and solemn music. Nikita Rozhdestvensky's camera is careful and extremely accurate, and Vitaly Vinogradov's editing allows not to miss a single detail in the panorama of the rumbling hell of the front line. In general, everyone responsible for the visual component of the picture deserves every praise: absolute reliability in the absence of speculative hyperrealism is their great merit.

" Panfilov's 28 " is not only extremely spectacular and scary, but also beautiful cinema. And that's how it should be: it works for the idea and the task. After all, the film is about a heroic deed. The feat should not only be shown, it should be sung. And sung in a high syllable. A large smear, stamps like paints, death is red. "Well, how else?", the brave political instructor Klochkov , smiling enough, looking through binoculars at the first destroyed tanks, three hours before his death. And here it is. Each of the wonderful cast (not stellar, with the exception, perhaps, of Alexander Ustyugov) plays as if a collective image, at once a lot of heroes who fought for the fatherland.

Dying in battle one after another, they become a legend right here, before our eyes. A legend that is no less necessary than the memory of the fallen, and which is precisely the most reliable form of memory. The echo of achievement spreads in circles along the river of time both into the past and into the future. In one of the best scenes, fighters, advancing to positions, recall stories about three hundred Spartans and seven samurai, not yet knowing that they are already going into eternity and will also become a symbol. Very, very strong.

The Germans are shown in the picture by the same“dark, cursed horde”, they have no faces, no personalities. A huge, indestructible, terrible force, an intelligent death machine that does not spare anyone, but stumbled there, at Dubosekovo. They do not speak, only"babble in Basurman". And the heroes say.“Today, lads, there is no need to die for the Motherland. Today we need to live treasure for the Motherland ", - Sergeant Dobrobabin explains the task in the dugout.“You don't need to die, you need to be tight. Do you hear the difference? To stand firmly, one must be alive ", - the battalion commander Reshetnikov greets the commander going to his death.

Image

They fought for the Motherland, stood tight, stood to death, stand like stone giants on the Volokolamsk highway. And now they are forever immortalized in the wonderful film Kim Druzhinin and Andrey Shaliopa . The whole family can and should go to the cinema without popcorn. Go and watch how they lived and died. And how to behave in the only right way when the enemy is on the doorstep.
