Review of the movie Life of Pi. Symbiosis

Ang Lee well done – than listening to the groans about how this book is fundamentally non-screenable, he just took it and transferred it to the screen. The story of a thrice-believing Hindu who swam across the largest ocean with a good-natured creature of God on board a spacious, almost luxurious boat – impressive. Especially considering the way of filing – strange in its beauty, subtle and clear. Another would be to do without pretentious statements that you, they say, will believe in God after all this, and it would be fine in general. There are enough questions of faith in the movie.

But first the beauty – he is everywhere. Surprisingly permeates every frame, every scene, all at once. One can only guess how Claudio Miranda movieed there, but that she is a master of her craft – not even a statement or fact, but a dogma. Everything seems to glow from the inside, it becomes surprisingly clear – as if each molecule of the tape was separately delineated. Endlessly saturated colors and paints, which are painted with what is happening, fall from the screen with all their ease, as if setting new standards for color reproduction. So with a calm soul and a clear conscience, we can say: the movie looks much more real than reality itself. Even with all the fantasticness of its events.

And also stereoscopy – that rare case when it is used not for the sake of a mark-up on tickets or the opportunity, albeit qualitatively, to throw objects at the audience, but only to look at things more fully. The depth is important here – so that the already impeccable picture finally put the remaining heavyweights into a trance. And Lee and Miranda are happy to provide her with – not only to the audience, but also to ourselves. So when, during the first sunset, the sea on the horizon merges with the heavens – as if no one had ever thought to separate the firmament from the firmament – you take it for granted. And besides, to the music that turns the ears of even the deaf into the most sensitive sense organ.

Of course, all these are just tools for staging – and Ang Lee uses them extremely skillfully. For example, the scene of a shipwreck can rightfully be considered one of the scariest in the movie – everything happens quickly, chaotically, nothing is really clear. The dots on the deck, waving lanterns, are washed away by the next giant wave into the sea – like the fireflies have taken a long voyage. The ship shakes as on the Day of the Last Judgment, the wind knocks down, some people are trying to save someone, a boat falls, a whirlpool, a storm, the noise of a thousand hammers colliding with their anvils and hands, finally, desperately cling to the last hope like a vice. All this, even on the screen, inspires fear, and when you think how it looks in real life ...

In other words, it was shot perfectly - Eye-catching. A natural thriller in which two opponents are constrained by an ultra-small space, so there is nowhere to go. Extremely stressful. But here are the questions of faith … let's hope that conversations about docked, in comparison with the book, the meaning – not an exaggeration. Otherwise, all these questions of religion, sorry, my veiled spoiler, a particularly cynical pragmatist will gladly reduce to psychology, if not psychiatry, and defense mechanisms. And although the ending is ambiguous, we are given a choice - – it's easy to guess which – in which the essence of religion is manifested, then in any case, in order to believe in God, you will have to, for a start, even so believe in him.

Here is a story directly with the tiger himself, and another episode with one interesting, ahem, `` staging post '' before turning to the finish line – much more interesting and meaningful. The transformation of implacable enemies into sworn friends opens up rich opportunities for full-fledged discussions. Fear moves the will, and taking care of the enemy saves one's own life - paradox on paradox, and not an ounce of sweetness. Tiger – by the way, almost entirely drawn, so Gollum himself shakes hands respectfully! – does not suddenly become human, and generally resists to the last. And the main character, under the power of circumstances, changing his nature, does not change his character. Here they are – real miracles, so incredible, but so real. Almost there.

Speaking of the main character, the staunch Pi Patel. Suraj Sharma, who has played the role of the main hypostasis of the three times believer, plays gorgeous. Alive, desperate, sincere, purposeful, on the screen he wearily looks into the distance and screams at the top of his voice, `` marks the territory '' and pacifies the tiger, opens up new horizons for itself – and the coast. Powerful performance for an almost solo role, especially considering his youth and the on-screen presence of his seasoned colleague Irfan Khan. As for the lack of replacement of Tobey Maguire with Rafe Spall, then this decision turned out to be expedient. With all due respect to this actor, honor and praise to Lee that he noticed it in time – so the story did not come into confrontation with the famous person.

" Life of Pi " I did not become a revelation. With all the beauty of presentation and skill of execution, issues related to faith and religion, due to low penetrating power, fade into the background – no matter how hard the scriptwriter, the director, or the entire movie crew put together. We can say that he did not cope with his main task. But thanks to this, the relationship between the inhabitants of the boat came to the fore. touching and uplifting despite their ending. Relationships, looking at which you believe in everything – and want to live. And you live. Almost like Pi.
