Review of the movie The Last Frontier. There are no former FBI agents

" The Last Frontier " can be called the brainchild of Sylvester Stallone. He produces the picture, wrote the script himself and was supposed to play the main character, but on reflection sane gave way to his friend and colleague Jason Statham. In the chair of director Gary Fleder, who has had more than one good crime movie to his credit. Suffice it to recall What a Dead Man Can Do in Denver.

This is the story of an FBI agent who “took up arms against a sea of disasters and ended them in opposition.” Boston FBI Phil Broker (Jason Statham) worked undercover at a drug biker club. During the final operation, they manage to take the head of the drug mafia, but the gangster's younger brother is killed in a shootout, and Broker's incognito is disclosed in an annoying way. With a firm intention to change fate and in search of peace, Broker leaves Boston and moves with his 10-year-old daughter to the Louisiana outback, the birthplace of his wife who died a year ago. In the Louisiana wilderness, however, all the same dirty crime and by a ridiculous coincidence of circumstances, Phil finds himself in a war with the local mafia.

The movie is rather unsophisticated, to put it mildly. To exaggerate, instead of the expected cool action movie, we are offered almost a movie for family viewing. Even cozy in moments, and rather chaotic than dynamic. Filmed in the style of the old school without computer tweaks, which can probably be considered a pleasant variety and a plus. But the picture, i.e. camera work, quite successful in depicting the beauties of Louisiana nature, not too clingy in action scenes.

Jason Statham — the best part of the story. It has long since become an English and global action brand and has consistently reaffirmed its reputation as a tough macho. Here in excellent physical and professional shape, convincing as a professional assassin, loving father, wise diplomat, and even a ladies' man. I can't help but say that he quite successfully tries himself in a dramatic context (Revolver, London, Hummingbird Effect), this allows us to hope that, tired of pure action movies, he will be in demand further in others movie genres.

Everything else in the movie — tears. James Franco in the role of local drug mafia Alligator looks like a cook next to Stateham, although according to the scenario it plays its own big game, in which the Broker must be a bargaining chip. Franco frowns diligently and makes a menacing look, but the point is not even that the character is not too cool, but that Franco has it written on his forehead: a boy from a good family who dreams of becoming cool. In this role, he does not manage to `` be '', only to appear. His Alligator is not so much cool as greedy, he does not accept bloody showdowns and is even afraid, he wants to make simple money on the Broker when he finds out that he crossed the road to Boston gangsters. But the character's greed also does not look very convincing.

Around the Alligator, Sherrill's girlfriend (Winona Ryder) hovers around, who came to him straight from a cool biker party. Ryder and Franco often appear on the screen lately, in this project she is the same alien link as Franco, trying to imitate emancipation with a rich life experience.

Kate Bosworth, in the role of Alligator's sister, begins as an eccentric and aggressive drug addict who even keeps her husband on a short leash, but quickly fades away and dissolves into everyday life. The boss of the local police (Clancy Brown) somehow looks after the order in the city without enthusiasm, without indicating his civil and professional positions, except for a `` feat '' the episode when he pours out the whiskey that the Alligator gave him, but after that as he leaves.

Somewhat more colorful turns out to be Frank Grillo, a biker, hitman and just a `` beast '', a former friend of Cheryl, who received an order for Broker. All in tattoos with a piercing gaze and a fairly square, stubborn jaw, he really exudes danger, but ... next to Statham he still gets lost.

As for the above-mentioned `` comfort '', it is created 10 -year-old daughter (Isabella Vidovic), her school psychologist and the redhead charm of Miss Heche (Rachelle Lefebvre), with whom her daughter is trying to bring her father, and the daughter's cutest black kitten, whose loud rumbling we are specially allowed to listen to. In this company, Statham's hero feels no less organic and comfortable than in war.

By the end of the movie, there is a frank feeling of disposability, uselessness and, most of all, the cardboardness of villainy, as if Statham warmed up on targets in the shooting range.

.. next to Statham is still lost.
