Sony Pictures will not pay cinemas for 3D glasses

Sony Pictures has officially notified distribution networks that on May 1, 2012 it will no longer compensate them for the use of 3D glasses during its stereoscopic movies. This is reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

“This issue must be finally resolved between us and our partners. We give them enough time to change their policy in this matter, '' commented Rory Brewer, president of the Sony rental department.

Note that the studio's expenses for providing cinemas with 3D glasses were very significant - from five to ten million dollars for a movie if it was a world-class blockbuster.

Sony's initiative primarily concerns RealD, which controls most of the home market. In the United States, the cost of glasses is most often included in the cost of tickets, and after the session viewers can either throw the glasses into special containers or keep them for themselves. Compensation for rental chains is paid after the end of the rental, depending on the number of tickets sold.

Instead of the existing system, Sony management suggests organizing the sale of glasses in the lobby of cinemas. Thus, rental companies can create a new business model that is profitable for themselves.
