Review of the movie The Hobbit 3: The Battle of the Five Armies. Bilbo Baggins Farewell Tour

" It is dangerous to go beyond the threshold, – Bilbo Baggins once spoke. - You just have to give free rein to your legs - and it is not known where you will be carried by " … But no matter where you wander, it is impossible to pass by the end of the path: there are no endless roads. Well, the 13-year wandering in Middle-earth also ends. (If anyone forgot, the first `` Lord of the Rings '' appeared already in 2001). In general, the end of an era, ladies and gentlemen!

However, for such a case, you need something out of the ordinary, something that would be remembered for a long time. There is a good reason for the expression “final chord.” It was he who needed Peter Jackson, in order to triumphantly complete his epic and `` go down in history undefeated '', rather than the polite clapping of slightly disappointed fans. And such a chord … Did not work out. Unfortunately. It was just a good movie. Strong, not too boring, in some way stronger, in some way weaker, but, firstly, cobbled together in the `` image and likeness '' all the previous ones, and secondly, it is clearly a passage among other paintings of Middle-earth. I repeat: good, but passable …

And the main reason for this is – the plot of the movie itself. See what happens. (I will try to explain myself without the help of spoilers). After the death of the dragon Smaug, all of his treasures become the property of the King Under the Mountain Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). However, the Lake City is destroyed, and people need to live on something: Bard-archer (Luke Evans) decides to demand his share from the dwarves. Immediately out of nowhere (however, as always) the elves appear under the leadership of the pompous Thranduil (Lee Pace) – and make their claims to the dragon inheritance. Orcs, as you understand, are also not going to let everything take their course and equip several armies on the way; they, however, need the mountain itself more, and not the gold hidden in it.

Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), as a representative of the most peaceful people in Middle-earth, is trying to prevent a new dwarf-elven war (I won't tell you the details, don't wait!), but they are blinded shine of `` gold '', and …. And that is all. The plot ends. A battle begins, which lasts more than an hour in screen time. Armies collide, heroes fight in pairs, then alone, it is wildly interesting to watch, but the imagination is sleeping. For there is no intrigue! New heroes – only one (a couple of wild goats does not count), this is the amazing Dain Iron Heel (Billy Connolly), he really brings the action to life, but he is given only a few scenes, nothing more. There are no new locations: We have already seen the Lake City, the Lonely Mountain too …

Now about the battle itself. He's certainly impressive. And not so much by its scale as by the staging of separate `` duels. '' In my opinion, the choreography of the war is flawless here. A couple of times Peter Jackson even surpasses the `` barrel battle '' from The Hobbit 2: The Desolation of Smaug, and this, you see, is not so easy. In general, when it comes to armed clashes, the Battle of the Five Armies able to give odds to any of the series of Middle-earth.

But the Hobbit is not alive by war! And no battle will be able to patch up the script holes: no one knows where Bard and Dain suddenly disappear (they disappear from the movie, evaporate, Jackson simply forgets about them); the fate of the precious metal suddenly, too, stops worrying. And the most important (and saddest) – The Hobbit 3: The Battle of the Five Armies absolutely no surprise. It has no surprises, surprises, pitfalls, if you will. This also applies to the plot, and pictures, and special effects. Before us is all the same good old (or bad) Middle-earth, to which we so managed to get used to in 13 years. Yes, it's interesting with him, but don't expect shock or miracle - neither one nor the other will be. Just a good movie with good stunts is waiting for you. And that's all.
