Review of the Skyline movie. Fly into the light

One fine night, the dark skies shed some bright blue rays of light on Los Angeles. A group of young people sleeping in a hotel after a party would not have noticed at all - but one of the guys woke up, opened a window and disappeared in a blue glow. Previously, it never occurred to anyone that the alien annexation of Mother Earth could begin so gracefully and beautifully: from blue rays, on which people fly, like a swarm of insects on flowers. The Strauss brothers' computer action movie Skyline, pretending to be a one hundred million blockbuster, tries to hypnotize us with the victory of form over content.

I've disliked the Strauss brothers (Colin and Greg) since the Alien vs. Predator: Requiem cross-over, which dashed hopes for an interesting crossover between two great alien movie series. Founders of the special effects company Gidroulks (doesn't mean anything - just sounds cool) these two seem to be eager to make a cult movie - forming their own niche for it.

So far, the niche is being formed reluctantly - other people's techniques and images are used, and in general the brothers can easily be suspected of copying successful samples in order to make money on it. Skyline, for example, tries to be Monstro and the `` Matrix '', playing on the alien invasion field with monsters from computer shooters.

However, the Frankenstein genre of the Strauss brothers already has quite recognizable features. Firstly, at the forefront of their movies are not people, but imperturbable brothers from outer space, treating people not with hostility, but indifferently: like an empty place. Secondly, explosions and gunfire speak more than the most sincere words. Third, it won't end well for people.

" Skyline ", of course, meets all these criteria - surprising out of the blue by the fact that it turned out to be much better than expected from him. No, the script in the movie is, of course, idiotic, and trying to pretend to be a blockbuster with a huge budget is only annoying - but there is something about the new creation of the Strauss brothers that makes him nod respectfully at the end credits.

The main thing is the tangible spirit of independent cinema, made by a group of enthusiasts, all together" on fire " a common idea. In Skyline this spirit is in everything: in manual - like from `` Monstro '' - a camera, in an unknown but very natural cast of young people, in a hotel as the only movieing location. Separately, it is worth noting the unusual portraits on the walls, amusingly `` rhymed '' with the action of the movie, which add charm to what is happening.

The main disadvantage - apart from the idea that aliens will conquer us through a hypnotizing light, `` Skyline '' nothing to offer: the whole movie the characters run back and forth and up and down the hotel, and around - on the ground and in the sky - the battle for Los Angeles is going on. Those who expect an original idea from the Strauss are better off relaxing: Skyline piled in order to please the eye - but not the mind.

However, despite the comical places and frankly computer effects, there are not so few beautiful scenes in the movie. The monstrous alien ships look amazing, sucking in whole crowds of people with blue rays. Scenes of heroes fleeing from ground and air creatures were made frighteningly - and the episodes with cars were generally a success for the directors! Spectacular - almost like The Matrix - the helicopter explodes and flies into the glass roof, falling apart. The smoky and smashed Los Angeles looks cool, the rocket attack on the main alien ship excites - and much more.

"Skyline" is likely will remain in the memory as a rather idiotic cranberry about the alien invasion - having earned his own and sailing off to the archive of movie trash. But never, never - even a full-fledged 3D cinema era - now not to forget the piercing blue eyes of alien monsters. They will always keep an eye on us from the horizon.
