Review of the movie Eagle of the Ninth Legion. Medal of Courage

For a start, it is worth noting that the literary basis for the movie `` Eagle of the Ninth Legion '' there was a children's book, and therefore, before watching this movie creation, it is important to understand what exactly you expect from it: a deep historical drama with large-scale battles and an emotional story, or a simple adventure tale with good action and an extremely pretentious plot. If the latter is the case, then you have come to the right place and will be rewarded with a good movie at a time. If there is something more, you better skip it.

Having left the ranks of the Roman army due to a serious injury, the young centurion Marcus Aquila wants to return his good name to his family and, together with the slave Eskaya, goes in search of his father, who disappeared in the mountains Scotland along with the Ninth Legion, which he commanded. Together they will have to go through the tribes of barbarians, fight the nomads and test the strength of their spirit for strength.

Unfortunately, from the very beginning, the movie is not taken seriously: the plot turned out to be overly superficial and naive, with predictable plot twists, primitive dialogues and extremely formulaic characters, in which, apart from the transcendental positivity, there is nothing alive. The heroes walk around with mega-serious faces and, without ceasing, talk about honor and courage, taking advantage of any opportunity to sacrifice themselves somehow or say a fiery speech that will ignite the fire of virtue in the hearts of other on-screen dummies (the scene in the gladiatorial arena, of course, is the top fabulous naivety).

In the era shown on the screen you just don't believe: yes, the costumes and props are good, but the lack of details, a small number of panoramic shots of scenery simply do not allow the audience to believe in the realism of what is happening. The casting of the actors also adds fuel to the fire: Channing Tatum, with a typical American appearance and a face licked to a shine, is not at all perceived in the image of a Roman soldier, who at that time were not very careful about their appearance. The same goes for Jamie Bell.

Their acting is the same as all aspects of the movie: superficial, mechanical, if you like. Scowls and pretentious exclamations about honor and courage. In principle, the point here is more in the poor elaboration of the characters' images by the scriptwriters, but the actors themselves, apparently, did not try to breathe at least some individuality into them.

The above said about a good action and it is really good here. though with a small caveat: within the framework of a fairy tale. This is not a Centurion for you with liters of blood and severed limbs. Here there are vigorous sword fights, you can feel a good setting and powerful physical training of the participants. But because of the teenage age rating, the editor cuts out all the relish of massive battles, and the almost complete absence of general plans (apparently, there was not enough money for this and the operator forgot about them) makes potentially good action scenes just good.

" Eagle of the Ninth Legion " - a weak, typically teenage fairy tale in the entourage of the era of the times of the Roman Empire, in fact, for them, probably, the movie was made. For the rest, you can only say one thing: if the aforementioned disadvantages are not so significant for you, then it is quite possible to get pleasure from viewing. Otherwise, as they say, at your own peril and risk.
