Review of the movie Crime Trick from Henry. Robbery according to Chekhov

Movie “ Henry's Crime Trick ” movieed by the not very famous director Malcolm Venville, who has only one full-length movie behind him. Keanu Reeves, after a two-year hiatus, decided to produce the movie himself, in which he would like to play. At first glance, this picture may well turn out to be a `` checkpoint '' and does not bode well. But don't be in a hurry to be disappointed, because “ Henry's Crime Trick ” may well claim the title of a new modern classic.

The plot of the movie could be described as an ordinary story about a bank robbery, if one of the scriptwriters of the movie were not Sasha Gervasi, the person who wrote to the delight of many moviegoers, the script for the “ Terminal ”. Thanks to him, an ordinary story of a robbery turns into a truly Chekhov story of finding happiness for the main characters.

Henry Thorne, the main character of the movie, due to being too shy to ask questions, goes to jail on false charges in a bank robbery. In prison, he meets the colorful Max Saltzman (played by James Caan, who is known to many by his role as Santino Carleono from The Godfather), a `` worker on trust '', and, in fact, just a swindler. It is Max who gives Henry an idea of genius in its simplicity: since he was jailed anyway, he could have committed a crime.

And now Henry and Max begin to implement their cunning plan of bank robbery which Henry allegedly already robbed, at the same time behaving absolutely unprofessionally: they acquire more and more new accomplices every five minutes, while even reaching the bank guard (who caught Reeves' hero at the very beginning). The newly minted robbers absolutely do not care about secrecy, which they most likely simply forgot about. And rest assured, everything will go smoothly for them.

But if it were that simple, it would not be a script from the creator of Terminal. The tunnel to the bank lies through the theater, where Julia (Vera Farmiga) plays, the acquaintance with whom Reeves' hero was extremely original. And the play in the theater is not staged just any, but “ The Cherry Orchard ” Chekhov. To gain access to the tunnel, which is located in one of the dressing rooms, Henry asks for the role, again, not just anyone, and Lopakhin. It should be noted that Vera Farmiga in the role of Ranevskaya looks very organic, even somehow `` in USA '', however, like Keanu Reeves with a fake Chekhov beard.

For with all the ease and ease of the plot, one can discern the idea that Gervasi always puts into his scripts. The play “ The Cherry Orchard ” appears in the movie for a reason. The main characters of the “ Henry's Crime Trick ” they play out on the stage not only the story of the unfulfilled hopes of Ranevskaya and Lopakhin, but also their own stories. Henry, Julia, and even Max Zaltsman (who has Chekhov – his `` favorite USA after Gorbachev '') live in their past throughout the movie, fearing to abandon it and start living anew. All of them were either imprisoned for ephemeral or insignificant crimes, or simply experienced some unrealizable illusions to life. According to Gervasi, they just need to believe in themselves, find and fulfill their dream. After all, “ the biggest crime – it is to give up a dream. ”.

And each hero of the movie finds his dream: Henry and Julia have love, and Salzman has a sunny California beach with pineapples “ the size of his head ”.

In my opinion, the story of "finding happiness in life" gives the movie “ Henry's Crime Trick ” more weight, and now I can't call it just a crime comedy. The overall mood of the movie turns out to be as if `` all-in-one '' rdquo; Juliusz Machulski to connect with the “ Society of Dead Poets ” Peter Weir, taking from the former the irony and witty plan of the robbery, while the latter has English humor and deep meaning.

And if you think that the movie will end as a traditional romantic or crime comedy, then think if it is possible in the “ Cherry Orchard ” the phrase “ Meet in Moscow ”. Sasha Gervasi thinks it's possible.
