The Boston Film Critics Association and the New York Network of Critics Name the Picture 12 Years a Slave the best movie of 2013. This is reported on the official websites of the organizations.

Boston movie critics also noted awards for the efforts of the moviemakers. Thus, Steve McQueen won the director's nomination, and the leading actor actor Chiwetel Ejiofor. Cate Blanchett wins in the female lead category for his role in the movie Jasmine.

The Boston critics considered the animation project Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises as the best cartoon.

Colleagues from New York also noted the acting skills of Cevitel Ejiofor and Cate Blanchett, however, in the director's nomination, the palm went to Alfonso Cuaron.

Miyazaki's cartoon was recognized as the best among New York network critics.
