Canadian IMAX and Chinese media giant Wanda Cinema Line Corp. signed a contract to build 80 IMAX cinemas in China. This is reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Partners plan to open 20 new halls annually, starting in 2016. More than half of them will be equipped with state-of-the-art laser projectors and sound systems. All work under the contract is scheduled to be completed by 2021.

Thus, the Chinese market will become the largest in the world for IMAX. Note that at the time of this writing, the Wanda Group operated 82 IMAX rooms in China.

As a reminder, the Wanda Group, which is controlled by China's richest citizen Wang Jianlin, has extensive plans to expand its influence in the entertainment industry.

Earlier, the company acquired one of the largest American cinema chains AMC, and also announced its readiness to invest eight billion dollars in the construction of state-of-the-art studios and pavilions for movieing in China.
