The New Zealand government should declassify all correspondence between government officials and representatives of New Line and Peter Jackson's Wingnut Films regarding the creation of the Hobbit trilogy.

The decision was made by New Zealand ombudsman David McGee. Until March 1, 2013, it is advisory in nature, but after this date it will become binding unless the Governor-General of the country uses his veto.

Representatives of New Line have already stated that if the government cannot protect the confidentiality of the negotiations, then “this will be a major obstacle for movie studios and local and foreign moviemakers to harness New Zealand's movie-making potential.” The studio of Peter Jackson adheres to the same point of view.

The secret negotiations concerned the confrontation between the creators of The Hobbit. and the leadership of the New Zealand Actors' Union, which tried to control the work of the artists on the set of the trilogy. In this conflict, the government sided with the movie studios.
