HBO plans to revive actor / producer James Gandolfini's Big Dead Place. Sources for The Hollywood Reporter claim that the drama will be commissioned for production, bypassing the pilot stage. Timothy Van Patten, who combined various positions in the series "The Sopranos" and "Boardwalk Empire", was appointed director and executive producer of the project.

Work on the development of the project began in September 2011 and was suspended due to the sudden death of Gandolfini in June 2013. The drama is inspired by Nicholas Johnson's memoir "Big Dead Place: Inside the Strange & Menacing World of Antarctica," which chronicles his work with the US Antarctic Program.

HBO is described as a story of survival in 21st century, which will introduce viewers to the harsh world of Antarctica, where scientists, bureaucrats and technicians working at McMurdo Station are fighting for the existence of the last unconquered continent.

"Big Dead Place" was one of Gandolfia's many production projects frozen after his death. In it the actor was supposed to play the main role.

In case the production of "Big Dead Place" gets off the ground, the series will join the lineup of new drama shows HBO – the porn-drama "Deuce", the fantastic TV series "Western World" and the rock-drama "Vinyl".

Van Patten movieed such series as "Game of Thrones", "Wiretapping", "Pacific Ocean", "Sex in the big city.
