George Lucas admired the freedom of Soviet cinema

Despite ideological constraints, Soviet directors were often freer in their search for creative solutions than Hollywood directors. This paradoxical statement was made in an interview with the Wall Street Journal by the creator of "Star Wars" George Lucas.

"I know many USA directors, and they have much more freedom than I had in my time," he complained. Lucas clarified that he and his Hollywood colleagues have always been constrained by certain financial constraints. "In the world in which we live, in the system that we have created for ourselves, in the sense of the entertainment industry, you cannot lose money. Therefore, you simply have to make strictly defined movies," the director added. As for the Soviet directors, according to Lucas, they were simply not allowed to criticize the government, "in all other respects they were completely free in their choice."

Recall that earlier George Lucas criticized the movie "Star Wars: Episode 7 - The Force Awakens" - the first episode of the famous franchise, created without his participation. He did not like the "retro style" of the painting and the exploitation of images already familiar to the audience. He also described the Walt Disney Company, to which he sold his Lucasmovie studio, as "white slave owners." The director later apologized for his words.
