Johnny Knoxville ("Obnoxious Grandfather") and NBC are working on a television adaptation of the "Hawaiian Dick" comic. This is reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Created by writer B. Clay Moore and artist Stephen Griffin, Hawaiian Dick was first published in 2002. The comic follows an American police officer named Byrd who was exiled to Hawaii in the early 1950s. There he plunges into the gloomy and dangerous atmosphere of the so-called paradise. At the time of this writing, two comic series have been released, the third will be published in 2016.

The project is described as a comedy action series with elements of procedural, humor and the supernatural. David Elliot and Paul Lovett ("Cobra Toss 2" ) will write and executive produce with Knoxville, Michael Rothenberg, David Janollari ("The Client Is Always Dead") and Eric Gitter ("Scott Pilgrim Versus All"). The production will be handled by Universal Television.

Knoxville has long been trying to movie the comic. Studio New Line Cinema developed the project in 2004 in the form of a feature movie with Knoxville in the title role. In 2006, attempts were resumed with new screenwriters, however, to no avail. In a potential TV project, Knoxville is not involved as an actor.
