Eddie Izzard starred in the Salem Witch Project (Topic)

Eddie Izzard ("Operation Valkyrie") stars in the pilot of the HBO drama "The Devil You Know", formerly called "New World", written by the creator of "Weeds" and "Orange is the hit of the season" Jenji Cohen. Also in the pilot, directed by Gus Van Sant, will star aspiring actresses Nadia Alexander ("Boardwalk Empire") and Ismenia Mendes ("Deal Travis In"). The Deadline reports.

The provocative historical drama explores the circumstances surrounding one of the most exciting chapters in American history - the story of the seventeenth-century Salem witches in New England - when intolerance and repression turned a neighbor against a neighbor and brought the city to mass hysteria. Pilot production will begin in the spring in Boston, Massachusetts.

Izzard will play the farmer Thomas Putnam, a conservative, unwavering and sincere Puritan and patriarch of the influential Putnam clan. He is a leader in the farming Salem, but his leadership is threatened from different directions. Izzard is co-starring in the new movie noir-drama Superpowers, which kicks off on PlayStation on March 10.
