Famous British moviemaker Sam Mendes will head the jury at the 73rd Venice Film Festival. As reported on the official website of the Biennale, this decision was made by the board of directors. Mendes' responsibilities will include the awarding of the main award - the Golden Lion, as well as the Silver Lion for directing.

“Designed for stage or screen, his works are able to reconcile the expectations of the most demanding critics with the tastes of a wide audience, and can transcend all geographical and cultural boundaries,” said festival director Alberto Barbera in a statement. In turn, Mendes himself, who previously took part in the Venice Film Festival, said that he was "absolutely delighted" that he "will return to welcome talented moviemakers from all over the world."

Recall that Mendes is one of the most titled British directors of the younger generation. He has the most prestigious cinematic awards, including the Oscars and Golden Globes. He is the creator of not only low-budget drama movies, but also large-scale Hollywood productions. In 2012, the movie "007: Skyfall" was released worldwide, which earned more than a billion dollars.

The Venice Film Festival runs from 31 August to 10 September 2016.
