The participation of Jimmy Kimmel, a very popular TV presenter in the USA, as well as the grandiose scandal in the final, could not have a beneficial effect on the television ratings of the Oscar 2017 ceremony. According to Deadline, preliminary data suggest that it hit a nine-year low.

Compared to last year's show, the rating has dropped by an impressive seven percent. In 2016, the Academy Awards drew 34.4 million US television viewers.

Note that over the past 15 years, the greatest interest was aroused by the 2004 ceremony, when the fate of the Oscar nominations for The Lord of the Rings 3: The Return of the King was decided. Then the ceremony was watched by 43.5 million viewers.

Recall that the 2017 Oscar ceremony was marred by a mistake by the organizers during the announcement of the winner in the Best Film category. Due to the confusion over the envelopes, the hosts named the musical "La La Land", although the Academy voted for the drama "Moonlight".

Responsibility for the incident was claimed by PricewaterhouseCoopers, which has been counting the votes of movie academics for eight decades. Its management promised to conduct an internal investigation in order to establish the causes of the error.
