Angelina Jolie underwent oophorectomy, or removal of the ovaries and falopian tubes, in order to protect herself from possible development of malignant tumors in the future. The actress herself spoke about this in an article published by the NY Times. According to Jolie, a few weeks ago, her doctor called her and said that one of the latest tests found a number of markers that may indicate an early stage of cancer. After consulting with several specialists, the actress made a decision, without waiting for the development of the disease, to resort to a radical surgical method of treatment. Angelina Jolie stressed that women should not take her revelation as a guide to action, since her case is complicated by the fact that three women in her family have died of cancer. The actress added that she is ready for the changes that may occur in her body in connection with hormone therapy, which she now faces, but she is glad that her "children will never say that their mother died of ovarian cancer." Recall that in May 2013, Angelina Jolie said that she had to have a mastectomy on both breasts, as she carries the BRCA1 gene, which causes breast cancer in 87 percent of cases and ovarian cancer in 50 percent of cases.
