Netflix has changed the view counting system

Streaming service Netflix has introduced a new system for counting "views" of its full-length and serial projects. As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, it was announced in a quarterly report addressed to the shareholders of the company.

If previously, to fix one "view", a subscriber had to estimate at least 70 percent of the timing of one episode of a TV series or movie, now the so-called "deliberate choice" will be recorded, involving only viewing the name of the show, that is, no more than two or three minutes.

It is alleged that the new accounting system has already been used to assess the popularity of the series "The Witcher" and thus the all-time record was recorded among the debut seasons of Netflix projects. The company's report also states that the new metric captures about 35 percent more views than the old one.

Note that Netflix has 167 million subscribers worldwide. In the fourth quarter of 2019, there were approximately 400,000 more of them in North America, and 8.3 million outside of it. The largest increases were recorded in the Middle East and Asia.
