What to see from the movies at the weekend: ”The Irishman” (2019)

Again the weekend, and again we are faced with the question of what to watch from films and, preferably, from those that have not been shown in cinemas and have not yet been used on the net. Among the films passing by the screens of USA cinemas, we rarely come across standing ones, but the previous week in this sense gave us a surprise.

But what does the week have to do with it? We were surprised by the streaming serviceNetflix, which brought together such world-famous stars as Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, etc. under the roof of one project.

What is the film "The Irishman" about

A film based on the documentary work by Charles Brandt "I Heard You Paint at Home" was shot, but the script was adapted for a fictional film, the total timing, including credits, is 3 hours and 29 minutes.

The story is another attempt to lift the veil over the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa, a well-known trade union leader at the time. Although to this day, to be honest, no one (except, of course, the persons involved in the "case") knows where he went.

Martin Scorsese loves flashbacks. Let's take at least the same "Casino". Here, too, the narrator - some old wheelchair fart Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro) - constantly makes us return to his "golden" 50-60s, when he quite happily, having come from the war, worked as a truck driver delivering meat carcasses.

Once he decided to throw a couple of carcasses to one of the local tycoons, so as to gain confidence. But then there was an order for the next. And the following. And then one day he completely stole all the meat from his own truck. Obviously, the employer did not leave it that way and filed a lawsuit against the driver.

Plot connection

A local trade union lawyer undertook to deflect Frank, and he still defamed him. And then, after it turned out that Frankie had not revealed a single extra name at any of the interrogations, as well as at the trial itself, the top was imbued with trust in him. He meets the local mafioso Russell Buffalino (Joe Pesci), who, in turn, introduces him to "union genius" Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino), after which they become friends with the latter.

Along the way, Frank earns money as a "hitman", and in between cases he is also engaged in trade union activities. And all would be fine if some did not think a lot about themselves and did not go too far. This is us - about Hoffa, of course.

We will not talk further, otherwise it will be one continuous scary spoiler. Better watch the trailer.

Many people complain that the film could have been cut short. But another Scorsese masterpiece has come to us in this timing. It was the unhurried narrative of the picture that made me so completely imbued with its plot.

Conclusion

Today we will not discuss the pros and cons of the project. The 8.0 rating for a movie that didn't go to theaters says a lot. Including the fact that if there are disadvantages, they are insignificant. And about the pros - consider that the whole film is one continuous plus. Not without a well-established Hollywood plot insanity, of course, but ...

So just watch and enjoy. Martin Scorsese does not knit brooms, and if he does, then it is of high quality.
