The new Rockstar action RPG Red Dead Redemption 2 is being portrayed in the media as a real revelation and a breakthrough in the gaming industry, which every gamer must play. What can I say, if the Xbox One version of the game is ranked 4th in the top of the most highly rated games in history. We've spent over 20 hours playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and fully agree that Rockstar's new project is one of the best games of all time. But even in this case, it should be admitted that RDR 2 has problems (in many respects subjective), which can be a good reason for some gamers to refuse to buy the game.

Overly detailed and unhurried animations

What happens when a colossal production budget, attention to detail and ubiquitous realism are combined in one bottle? The answer is Red Dead Redemption 2, which is absolutely ruthless about your free time and will make you watch thousands of must-have animations accompanying even the smallest actions. Here's the simplest example: instead of a small loot icon appearing when you are about to loot a chest, in RDR 2 you have to look at the leisurely animation of opening the chest, and then watch how Arthur carefully takes each individual item and puts it in his bag.

And this moment manifests itself in every moment of the game, in absolutely every little thing. Even during the search of corpses, Arthur lifts the body (or turns it from stomach to back) and slowly searches his pockets. Realism? Sure! So great is the need for it? The question is open.

Excessive realism and elements of survival

And also about the widespread realism, but now not in terms of animations, but in gameplay mechanics. In an attempt to copy real life in Red Dead Redemption 2, the developers approached on a manic level and, as in the recent Kingdom Come Deliverance, they are forced to take care of some of the physiological needs of the character, such as food and sleep. You have to keep track of five parameters: vitality, endurance and the "Dead Eye" function of the main character, as well as vitality and the same endurance of a faithful horse. Each of the parameters slowly but surely creeps down, so you have to play a kind of Tamagotchi.

And we have not yet said about the need to dress for the season, wash, clean weapons, comb and look after the horse. There are tons of such details in Red Dead Redemption 2 and they will invariably take up the player's time.

Overloaded control

Having filled the countless mechanics of the gameplay of Red Dead Redemption 2, the developers tried to make the controls as clear and convenient as possible. The result came out, frankly, a little dubious. For some of the simplest actions, you have to use as many as four (!) Keys on the gamepad. For example, do you have a desire to eat canned food on the go to make up for life? Then you will regret not being an octopus, because you have to do a whole operation of five steps in the version of RDR 2 on PS4:

• Hold L1
• Press R1
• Hold the right stick and point towards the desired group of objects
• Select an item with L2 or R2
• And be sure to release the L1 key only last, otherwise the whole algorithm will have to start over

Lack of clear explanation of gameplay mechanics

During the passage of Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4, sometimes you catch yourself thinking that damn it, almost everything in this game has to be discovered "by typing"! On the one hand, this is good, since there are many non-obvious nuances that are great to find on your own, but when the game does not explain the controls or what to do with a particular item, then this approach is a little annoying.

Two examples. First, you probably watched the gameplay trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 and remember how they stopped a witness with a shot upwards? So, in the game we did not see information on exactly how to pull off such a trick and we had to go to the game forums for explanations. Second, the game does not explain where to attribute the massive bear skin. Only again, with the help of the forums, it was possible to find out that a large bear skin in RDR2 can be sold to a hunter in the city. The problem was that we decided too early to hunt the local "King of Beasts".

We strongly advise not to sit too long in the open world, but to go through at least a third of the plot to begin with, since many nuances are told in the plot. But here, too, everything is not perfect, since a hint pops up in the corner of the screen for only a few seconds, and damn it, always at the moment when you try to read the subtitles during a dialogue.

Slowness and emphasis on research

Can you imagine gunfights taking less than 30 minutes out of the first 20 hours of playing Red Dead Redemption 2? We still can't believe that Rockstar created such a meditative, unhurried and not focused on action game. RDR 2 is in the very last place about murder, it is primarily a meditative and role-playing adventure and a world that lives its own calm, measured life. You can play RDR 2 for hours and not face any opponents, this is an unprecedented case for a kind of "third person action". And this drawback is the most controversial in our selection, but it should be taken into account by those who expected to see GTA in the wild west.

We emphasize once again that despite the challenges, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a phenomenal game that moves the entire gaming industry forward. Even the same realism did not bother us at all, since it has a positive effect on the atmosphere and is not too intrusive. Simply, there is a possibility that if you decide to buy Red Dead Redemption 2 in the wake of the surrounding enthusiasm, you may be disappointed. The new Rockstar Western is a colossal blockbuster that, however, we cannot recommend for every player to acquire.
