Why play Warcraft III: Reforged? Blizzard answers and talks about the main innovations of the remaster
When you start creating a remaster of a cult classic, you should always adhere to the main rule: "Either do well, or do nothing." Judging by the extremely negative reaction from the players on Warcraft III: Reforged, Blizzard decided to ignore the rule. So why play the Warcraft 3 remaster anyway? Apparently for the sake of changes from the original game, and the main ones were told by the producer, lead artist and chief designer of Warcraft III: Reforged in an interview with PC Gamer. Not without questions about Warcraft IV. Here are the main excerpts from the interviews and talk about the differences between the remaster and the original Warcraft III.
Looking back on World of Warcraft, Reforged has slightly redesigned heroes such as Arthas and Sylvanas, while also redesigning some locations, including Dalaran. Among other major changes in the story campaign, the developers mention a small rework of the cutscenes. The best example is the mission "The Culling of Stratholme", where they brought the camera a little closer to the heroes and added new actions to the characters to complement important plot points.
In an effort to make the game a little more friendly to newcomers to the RTS genre, Blizzard has added a repair icon to damaged buildings. Additionally, in many missions there are clearer instructions on what to do at a particular moment. Also, unlike the original game, Warcraft III: Reforged allows you to choose an easy difficulty level from the start.
The balance of the multiplayer mode has been changed, which they promise to regularly update. In the coming year, we should expect more than a dozen patches, as Blizzard admits that sometimes they themselves do not understand which of the game functions they broke in the new update.
The custom map editor has undergone a major overhaul. The main changes are fundamental changes to the engine in Redorged. For example, from now on cards support 24 players instead of the previous 12, and the limit on the number of units per level has also been removed.
In addition to improved textures and effects, many characters have received unique designs. If earlier, to emphasize the features of various units, they simply took a standard model, scaled it and changed the color, now each character, be it a furbolg or a paladin with a unique name, was drawn a new design. In particular, the Lead Artist for Warcraft 3: Reforged prides itself on the detailed character models. When in 2002 developers had to draw an animated 3D face separately for each unit, now the same model is used in the tab with portraits and in the game itself. The character design was heavily influenced by the development work on Heroes of the Storm.
By the beginning of the development of Warcraft 3: Reforged, they started in a scenario similar to StarCraft: Remastered: they asked the players what they expect from the updated version of the game. According to the developers, in order to return the former players to Warcraft 3, they interviewed professional gamers and creators of popular custom maps, and based on the information received, they made changes to the balance and editorial tools, making it not only more functional, but also easier to learn.
The developers noticed that the players most often preferred the same heroes and units. For example, when playing as undead, players most often chose the Death Knight, the Demon Hunter for the night elves, and the Blademaster for the orcs. Blizzard did not like this monotony, so they adopted a number of changes to push players towards new scenarios, improving the abilities of unpopular units. As an example, we can recall the hippogriff riders, who were often not used due to the need to separately pump the taming the hippogriff skill. In Warcraft 3: Reforged, an archer can mount a hippogryph at any time. The Power of Nature skill of the Keeper of the Grove has also been rebalanced. From now on, Ents move a little faster and have an increased health pool by 10 points.
Finally, PC Gamer asked about the future of the series after the release of Warcraft 3: Reforged and the prospects for the release of Warcraft 4. Blizzard is very excited about the release of an updated version of Warcraft and hopes to attract not only new gamers to the game, but also to increase the importance of Warcraft III in the esports arena ... The developers did not give a direct answer to the question of creating 4 parts, but they are happy that the RTS genre is returning to life again, albeit mainly on mobile platforms and as a MOBA. Hopefully, if Warcraft 4 ever comes out, it's definitely not in the MOBA genre on smartphones.
