Movies you might have missed in 2017

Image LostFilm.INFO presents to your attention ten films that were released in USA in 2017, but were not accompanied by loud advertising campaigns and hype. Nevertheless, many of them featured actors adored by millions of moviegoers, such as Brian Cranston, Cillian Murphy and Morgan Freeman, but none of the pictures on the list are part of any franchise and do not try to attract the attention of viewers by the presence of superheroes or dizzying action.

There is a plot for every taste in the selection: here there is a life-affirming story about retired robbers, a purely entertaining show with shootings, as well as a funny office slasher and almost Hitchcock's suspense. But all these small masterpieces of different genres have one thing in common - they were created not in order to collect as much money as possible from cinema visitors, but out of a great love for cinema. And you probably shouldn't miss this.

In the comments, you can also tell us about the films that became discoveries of the year for you personally.

Most relevant. "Perfect Strangers"

Image

Cinema can evoke a wide range of emotions in viewers - from delight to sadness, from anger to confusion. But this comedy-drama by Italian director Paolo Genovese is an exceptional case. Hot and sobering, it causes an acute feeling of awkwardness and a desire to grab onto your smartphone and hide it somewhere far away, after changing the password. True, this will only happen by the end. By the way, it is better not to read about him in advance, if you nevertheless missed this picture. Until then, the film pretends to be a non-binding story about a friendly party. Nothing special: a group of people gathered to discuss the latest news over a delicious dinner and a glass of wine. Smartphones, of course, are laid on the table and jump into the hands of their owners more often than forks and knives. But one of the already amused friends suggests playing a harmless game - each of those present must read aloud all incoming messages, and turn on the speakerphone during calls. At first, the game seems funny, but the further, the more of these smartphones crawl out on the table of nasty skeletons. And rest assured, sooner or later the director will get to your pain point. And even if you personally have nothing to hide from your family and friends, this does not mean that they are not hiding anything from you ...

The most invigorating. Shootout

Image

The crime thriller by Ben Wheatley tells the story of a gun deal that went wrong and turned into an all-out firefight with foul language, setups, collusion, flirting, toughness, and other forms of communication among Boston thugs 70 -s. And all this is not only very noisy, but also terribly funny. In fact, this is not a thriller at all, but a real black comedy, in the course of which everyone is firing at each other for nothing. In addition, the film boasts a delightful cast: Armie Hammer, Sharlto Copley, Noah Taylor, Cillian Murphy and Brie Larson gathered in one frame to shower opponents with bullets and selected curses. Try to guess who survived.

The most honest. "The raccoon is to blame for everything"

Image

A well-known fact: some modern family men, returning from work in the evening, do not rush to go home, but sit in the car, drinking beer in silence or to their favorite music. And all because they need a break between a work day full of worries and responsibility and the inevitable domestic mess. The main character of the comedy "The Raccoon is to Blame for Everything" once decided not to cross the threshold of the house at all, and instead hid in the attic of his own garage and began day after day to watch his wife go crazy, not knowing what to think about the missing wife. Meanwhile, the head of the family himself at night steals food from garbage cans, relieves himself in a bucket and, spying on his relatives, makes witty comments on what is happening. This film, of course, rests mainly on the acting of Brian Cranston, who before the resounding success of the series "Breaking Bad" was known to TV series fans precisely as a wonderful comedian. In the sitcom "Malcolm in the Spotlight," which aired from 2001 to 2006 and earned seven Golden Globe nominations, Cranston played a father of four who copes with stress in quite original ways. So this man knows perfectly well how, over what and with what intonations one should joke, hiding from relatives in the attic.

Most touching. "Tony Erdmann"

Image

Despite the Oscar nomination, this film was easy to miss for many reasons: German cinema without big names, the title does not say anything, and even the plot says that we will have a story about how an elderly single father is trying to improve relationship with a successful and busy daughter. Not very intriguing. However, this tragicomedy has collected fifty awards and countless laudatory reviews. The secret is that the director Maren Ade revealed such a hackneyed topic subtly, wittily, without instructive intonations and at the same time with absolutely incredible catharsis, in which a large awkward furry monster was involved. But before that, the audience has yet to enjoy a luxurious performance of an old man desperately craving for attention. His behavior looks so out of place in the backdrop of corporate gloss that we, to those who understand the need for prim dinners with investors, uncomfortable clothes and fake emotions, all this begins to seem completely false and meaningless.

The most black-funny. "Experiment" Office "

Image

Greg McLean staged a viable comedy thriller with horror elements from a script by James Gunn, who directed all sorts of hilarious thrash metal prior to Guardians of the Galaxy, not claiming a place in history and best movie lists. And then, apparently, Gann decided to remember his youth and wrote a story about how office plankton in a confined space kills each other in order to survive. Comparison with the "Cube", which is already considered a classic, suggests itself only if Vincenzo Natalie had everything seriously, here much more people are responsible for intrigue and bloodshed, among them there are real freaks. In addition, the ways in which the filmmakers kill their characters can also be attributed to the category of trash. It should be noted that the techniques of comedy slashers look quite fresh in the decorations of the office space. And this bloody massacre itself looks in one breath, not to mention the effect of psychological relaxation from the dream of killing all your colleagues embodied on the screen.

Most aggressive. "Wild Story"

Image

Alex de la Iglesia, known for his films vinaigrette of violence, laughter and absurdity, decided to conduct his own research into how quickly a person can slide into a savage state. It turns out that in the modern world, exactly half the length of an average film is enough for this - already in the middle of the comedy horror thriller "Wild Stories" all the main characters lose their human appearance. Except perhaps the initially disgusting vagabond, who, as it turns out later, was more a mark of the depth of the fall of the rest of the characters, clean and polite, than an independent plot unit. And this very fall is shown here as aggressively as possible - it looks at us from the screen with swelling eyes, clicks with crooked yellow teeth, pours out juicy insults, and eventually plunges it headlong into sewage. Not a movie, but some kind of misanthrope holiday! However, in the finale, the director still exhales a little and makes a modest curtsy towards those who have not yet lost faith in humanity.

The most life-affirming. "To leave beautifully"

Image

Firstly, this is a Zach Braff film, and in his creations you can always find at least something pleasant and witty. Second, Alan Arkin, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine played three retirees approaching the poverty line who decided to rob a bank. Thirdly, in the background, Christopher Lloyd himself was lit up - in the guise of a cocaine-hungry marasmatist of very advanced years. Not designed for any awards and praise from venerable experts in crime comedy, the balance of unorthodox humor, critical attitude to the system, lyrical digressions and action, including age-appropriate heroes (stealing chicken shanks from the supermarket followed by riding on a shopping cart ). Well, Zach Braff has always been able to reach the hearts of the audience, and in the case of Leaving Nicely, with the support of such a reputable cast, also gave us a good dose of optimism.

The most elegant. "Party"

Image

The black and white tragicomedy of the British director Sally Potter resembles a luxurious and very sophisticated construction of capacious dialogue and outstanding acting, which the director deliberately destroyed before our eyes in order to show how fragile human beliefs can be. According to the plot, guests come to a high-ranking lady at a party in honor of her new position. But small talk for some reason does not stick at all - instead of eating food, tasting drinks and dancing, everyone suddenly begins to measure their ideals, stigmatize and ridicule strangers, hand out useless advice and point out mistakes to each other. It feels like they were bitten by one, but some very noxious fly. From the speeches given in this film by actors such as Bruno Gantz, Cillian Murphy, Emily Mortimer and Patricia Clarkson, you can learn the art of satire. And if you pay attention to the relevance of the dialogues, it's time to go to the party yourself to tell everyone about this film and immediately be known as an intellectual.

The most terrible. "It comes at night"

Image

It is clear that avid fans of horror, who regularly watch the latest novelties of this genre in cinema, are unlikely to have missed this film. For others, a tape with a similar name and synopsis, which mentions an abandoned house in a dense forest, only says that another walk-through horror movie has been released on the screens. In fact, Trey Edward Schultz's project stands out from its competitors and is quite capable of giving a lot of unforgettable emotions to the most fastidious moviegoers. In the story, an unprecedented epidemic of a deadly virus has hit the world, and one family is trying to escape from it in a wooden hut, closing shutters and doors at night and observing a number of strict rules. Despite the not particularly intriguing plot, the film was the focus of attention of many reputable critics, who recklessly began to extol its virtues - the aesthetic picture, the oppressive soundtrack, skillful camera work and important content. Using a richer arsenal of techniques than the average horror directors, Schultz reaches unprecedented heights in the art of support, so that the connoisseur of good cinema will gladly note the influence of many masters. A bonus is attached to the Australian actor Joel Edgerton, who, as it became clear from the thriller "Gift", is great at sinister images.

The most atmospheric. Shadowkeep

Image

And finally, we would like to note one more film with a memorable title, but leaving a mark on the soul. Abode of Shadows is the story of a troubled family of orphans desperately fighting for their future. They just need to keep the death of their mother a secret until the eldest is 21 years old. Like the previous project, this Spanish horror does not catch on with penny screamers, but with a masterful thickening of the atmosphere tied to a dirty yellow rustic color scheme and a well-chosen cast. It is one thing when a director makes some little-known young actors suffer, and it is quite another thing to worry about George McKay from Captain Fantastic and Charlie Heaton from Mysterious Events. And also Anya Taylor-Joy plays in this film, who has already endured fear in the past year - in Shyamalan's "Split". Actually, and in terms of atmosphere and plot (beware of spoilers!), Shadowkeep is reminiscent of M. Knight's best horror films. And the director Sergio J. Sanchez, if he continues in the same spirit, will be able to produce something like the reference “Others” by Alejandro Amenabar or the more recent “Mama” by Andres Muschetti.

We also suggest that you conduct an audit of the missed films of the past and the year before.
