Sir Ian Holm has died

Image Sad news came from the UK. Legendary theater, film and television actor Ian Holm has died in London at the age of 89.

Ian was born on September 12, 1931, the son of a psychiatrist and a nurse. The passion for the acting profession came by accident: once Holm was sitting in line to the dentist and got into a conversation with the star of the provincial theater, Henry Bainton. Ian applied to the Academy of Dramatic Arts and had a distinguished career with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

In 1967, Holm won the prestigious Tony Theater Award. Having conquered the world of Melpomene, Ian turned his attention to cinema and TV. The Briton took the bull by the horns: his very first notable role (Beaufort Cannon, 1968) brought Holm an Academy Award. The actor became famous far beyond England in 1979, playing the android Ash in the cult fantasy horror film Alien.

Two years later, the Briton earned his first and only Oscar nomination for his role as sports coach Sam Massabini in Chariots of Fire. The list of the most famous films with Ian's participation also includes Brazil, Henry V, Hamlet, Frankenstein, The Fifth Element, and of course, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogy.

Ian Holm's services to cinema, theater and television have been recognized by dozens of professional awards, the most excellent Order of the British Empire and the title of knight-bachelor.
