In Rome, at the age of 78, the famous Italian director, Academy Award winner Bernardo Bertolucci has died. This is reported by the La Repubblica edition with reference to the master's entourage.

The director made his movie debut in 1962 at the age of 22 with the movie "Bony Godfather", which immediately attracted attention not only at home, but and in Hollywood, where at the end of the 60s a western was released under the title "Once Upon a Time in the Wild West", the script for which was written by Bertolucci.

Real recognition comes to him after the release of the provocative drama "The Last Tango" in 1972 in Paris "starring Marlon Brando. For this work, Bertolucci received his first Oscar nomination as a director.

The pinnacle of his work was the picture "The Last Emperor" in 1987 with the participation of such actors as Peter O'Toole, John Lawn, Dennis Doon and others. Bertolucci received two Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director. In general, the movie was awarded nine Oscars.

In 2011, Bertolucci received the honorary Palme d'Or for his contribution to cinema.
