Review of the movie After the Common Era. Jungle Gray

In an amicable way, this is not Shyamalan's movie, this is Will Smith's. According to his idea, with his submission, with his direct participation and, of course, financing, and in some places under his leadership. M. Night Shyamalan, in this case, turned out to be something like an invitee – although the word `` fake '' spins on the tongue – stars. A lightning rod that you can safely blame for all the movie's failures. After all, this is Shyamalan – and that says it all.

Which, however, does not negate the sad truth about the director's skills. It’s hard to believe that this director once made all viewers fall out in the finale of The Sixth Sense. And that he was the one who shot the atmospheric as well as the eerie Signs. Now he – director " Phenomena " and director of The Lord of the Elements. The thunderstorm of producers and the horror of moviegoers, capable of driving even the most interesting idea into the ground with his talent stabbed with an ax. Now its 'death note' Enriched with the movie After Common Era.

Still, Will Smith should have taken part in Django, which he thoughtlessly refused. We would, of course, have lost the pleasure of contemplating the tough Jamie Foxx, but after a short break in his career, Smith is clearly carried away to the wrong place. Although initially the idea of this fiction was beautiful and intriguing, everything turned into a rather colorless spectacle, despite all the efforts of artists and newfangled digital cameras from Sony. `` After our era '' – the tape is perfect, downright fantastically sterile.

Predictability, as well as godless stamping – this is half the trouble, you can survive it. It would be, if not for the rather dreary production. What scenes of survival and battles, what dramatic episodes – all are equally insipid and suggestive of sweet half-asleep in the cozy darkness of the cinema. And no attempts to diversify the action, to bring at least some kind of life into it. Unless the fertile surroundings of the post-apocalyptic Earth overgrown with the jungle, including its fauna, are used wisely, which, however, does not negate in some places frankly bad graphics, which for a movie with a similar budget is simply bad manners and disrespect for the viewer.

What causes genuine interest – so this is the fantastic world itself. All the most interesting things were left behind the scenes – how did the planet die, why did people forget about firearms, who are the true opponents who created and set the huge creatures on people? This is not a spoiler, this is a clear groundwork for a sequel, which is only briefly mentioned at the very beginning, but sharply and for a long time sinks into memory. Riddle. Secret. Not less, by the way, than the Earth of the future, which for more than a thousand unhappy years has undergone simply amazing changes, the credibility of which can only be left to the specialists. I think they will have something to laugh and cry about.

But the most important thing, of course – it is a father and son duo playing similar roles on screen. Be prepared for the fact that Will himself in the movie will be vanishingly small, and all that he has to do is – lie down most of the timekeeping bleeding, with broken legs. While playing a serious officer with an atrophied sense of humor – that he, in general, is naturally excellent at it (it's a sin not to play such a role).

Where more attention gets – and deserves – his son, Jaden. Once again, she and her father, after In The Pursuit of Happyness, play in movies the same who they are in life. And again, the duet develops without problems. The guy played his role surprisingly well and without exaggeration, filling the entire timing from cover to cover. Not always skillfully, not always coping, he, nevertheless, tries from the heart – that's noticeable. Moreover, this time his role is not just the main one, but the central and all-embracing one. A few more years of practice and it will be no worse than the father – so that the latter can be rightfully proud of him. All that remains is to envy the kind of atmosphere that must have prevailed between them on the set.

Alas, even the duet played does not save the movie from emasculation. A kind of family movie of the Smiths does not work either as a thriller or as an adventure, and it does badly with the role of science fiction. Perhaps it would be better for him to stay within the original concept – unsuccessful campaign of father and son, because of which the latter had to make his way through the forest to find and bring help for the first. And give the intriguing fantasy world into the hands of someone else, but not Shyamalan. There seems to be no turning back for him.
