Amazon talks about the fall of the Aztec empire

Image In recent years, many eminent directors and producers have chosen to partner with TV channels and online services, whose leaders are ready to give them much more creative freedom than the bosses of Hollywood studios. Steven Spielberg could not resist the temptation to take advantage of the benefits of the Golden Age of television. After several unsuccessful attempts to get the ball rolling on the historical blockbuster about the adventures of the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortez, the Oscar-winning director decided to transform his ambitious project into a miniseries format.

As it became known to The Hollywood Reporter, support for the four-part drama will be provided by streaming giant Amazon. The miniseries tentatively titled Cortez will tell the story of the title character's journey into the heart of the Aztec empire, which forever changed the course of world history.

The original script of the historical epic belongs to the pen of the legendary Hollywood author Dalton Trumbo, who at one time turned out to be a defendant in the disgraced Hollywood "Black List" and was forced to work under pseudonyms. The film was to be titled Montezuma, with Kirk Douglas aspiring to the lead role. To the disappointment of viewers, the picture never went into production during Trumbo's lifetime.

Dalton's script lay on the shelf for nearly forty years, until Steven Spielberg took an interest in it in early 2014. The director commissioned screenwriter Stephen Zellian (Schindler's List) to make edits to the text and slightly change the vector of the plot, so that the main character of the story would be Cortez, and not Emperor Montezuma II. Hollywood insiders are still at a loss to say whether Spielberg plans to start directing the mini-series on his own. Steven's immediate plans remain to work on the fifth part of "Indiana Jones", a remake of "West Side Story" and the drama "The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara", and therefore it is possible that when creating "Cortez" he will have to limit himself only to production functions.

Oscar winner Javier Bardem, who began to take an active interest in the role of his famous compatriot four years ago, will appear in the image of Hernan Cortez.

Spielberg, Bardem and Zellian will be co-producing the miniseries with Darryl Frank (Down from Heaven) and Justin Falvey (Borgia).
