Review of the movie Noah. Son of man

The story of Noah as interpreted by Darren Aronofsky only in general terms resembles the legend of the Old Testament patriarch and the flood, and all claims to `` reliability '' can be dropped immediately. It is quite obvious that the director did not set himself the task of telling exactly about the biblical catastrophe. Movie " Noah " first of all, about the monstrous burden of responsibility that the Creator placed on one, albeit the most worthy person.

How would you perceive the news that in the foreseeable future all life on the planet will be destroyed, and the only thing that will remain of the human race is you and your household? Would you calmly get ready for the road, swelling with pride that it was you who passed the terrible fate? Or are they thinking about that the victims of a worldwide catastrophe will be not only adults mired in sins, but also millions of children? Are you ready to calmly sail in the ark in the company of running, crawling, jumping and flying creatures, hearing choking people knocking on the walls of your ship? In the end, do you consider yourself entitled to become the new progenitor of mankind, or was your mission only to build a refuge for animals and birds that were always in harmony and worthy to inherit the earth without people?

This is what Darren Aronofsky's new project is about. His Noah is not a benevolent 500-year-old old man who spends his days and nights in prayer and sacrifice. Despite his righteousness, he is ready to kill the first oncoming hunters, who injured some semblance of a wolf. He is ready to lead his family through barren deserts, to find out exactly how he should complete his mission. At any moment he is ready to leave to certain death anyone who can prevent him from doing so.

Russell Crowe is very imposing in the role of Noah, “on his feet.” Noah, who not only needs to build an ark, but to decide every second: where God's plan ends, and his, man's, free will begins. He opposes not only circumstances and external enemies, but also his loved ones, each of whom has his own idea of the future of the new world. And this struggle is the hardest part of his burden.

Ray Winston is also wonderful, playing the leader of the doomed heirs of Cain. A man no less obsessed than Noah, but possessed not by faith, but by knowledge, which is akin to the knowledge of the serpent that tempted Eve. He has no doubts about the nearness of disaster, but, driven by pride, he sees the only way to salvation in violence.

To the credit of the rest of the actors, including young people, they all do not look just extras, shading the confrontation between the two main characters. More precisely, the two ideologies that have divided humanity since the first fratricidal conflict between Cain and Abel. Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Douglas Booth, and of course, Jennifer Connelly, who personifies the creative feminine, are not deprived of screen time at all and are very effective. Surprisingly, but the most optional seems to be the hero of Anthony Hopkins Methuselah. Most likely, due to the brevity of his stay on the screen and excessive comic, which is reinforced by not entirely successful localization.

There are several other very unusual characters in the picture that have nothing to do with the Old Testament text. The moviemakers did not reveal the secret of their presence in any of the previously presented trailers, frames and posters, and they are responsible for the most spectacular part of the project - the battle for the ark. As for the latter, without any exaggeration, Aronofsky showed the most breathtaking battle that would do credit for any fantasy movie. Which is all the more surprising given a very modest budget for projects of this kind.

In a word, "Noah" - this is, on the one hand, a chamber drama that is very typical for Aronofsky, focused on the personal drama of the protagonist, but on the other, it is a large-scale canvas that is quite consistent with the grandeur of the events. And if in the dramatic genre have " Nov " in recent years there have been worthy rivals, then in the fantasy genre he is completely alone, like a biblical patriarch.
