The dying old man regains consciousness and sees his long-lost son. A mother comes to her daughter, whom she has not met for many years. Amy Mann sings " Wise Up " . This is Magnolia, one of the best films of the 20th century.  The film begins with the famous suicide of Ronald Opus . Then the viewer is shown something that looks like scattered puzzles. A policeman is on a call - neighbors complain about the noise from the girl's apartment. The famous TV presenter of a sex program for men performs on stage, and then gives an interview to an annoying reporter. A young, dazzlingly beautiful woman goes from a doctor to a pharmacy and tries to dispense a prescription for a large amount of drugs. A dying rich old man, her husband, tells a male nurse about a son he abandoned many years ago. A former child prodigy who has become an adult and useless, he quarrels with his boss. The famous elderly showman is trying to make peace with his daughter. The boy-prodigy father takes him to the show "What Our Children Know", in which the teenager must win.  In 1998, New Line Cinema gave the go-ahead to Paul Thomas Anderson to shoot a film based on his own script. Before Magnolia Anderson made a name for himself with critics and moviegoers with Boogie Nights. In his new film, he has taken many actors with whom he worked in the previous project - Julianne Moore, John C. Reilly, William H. Macy, Philip Seymour Hoffman. For the role of TV host Frank Mackie Anderson invited Tom Cruise, a big fan of Boogie Nights . Cruz agreed to shoot for an unusual fee ($ 100 thousand), and his consent was a very big success for the project.  The star of the Golden Age of Hollywood, Jason Robards, was cast as the dying millionaire Earl Partridge . The elderly showman Jimmy Gator , host of What Our Kids Know, was played by Philip Baker Hall. The film also stars: Felicity Huffman, Orlando Jones, Melora Walters, Alfred Molina. Prodigy Stanley Spector played by Jeremy Blackman.  At the time of the film's release, it actually had only two big movie stars - Tom Cruise and Jason Robards . Over the years, most of the actors who played key roles either received Oscars or were nominated for this award. The film was released in late 1999 in a limited release. But already in January 2000, after the announcement of the nominees for the Oscar , the studio released the film in wide distribution, and Magnolia immediately acquired the status of a cult film.  The film won three Academy Award nominations forBest Supporting Actor( Tom Cruise ),Best Original Screenplay( Paul Thomas Anderson ) andBest Song( Aimee Mann , " Save me " ). Tom Cruise won a Golden Globe forBest Supporting Actor. It’s a thankless job trying to talk about Magnolia . Each time you watch it, there is a new moment that catches the eye.  A beautiful red-haired woman screams, breaking down, at the pharmacists in the pharmacy - her elderly husband, whom she cheated on for many years, is painfully dying. And now, when the heroine is so close to “freedom,” she realizes that she only needs this dying old man. With the role of Linda Partridge , the stellar years for Julianne Moore began.  The cast of the film was very even, but at that time Tom Cruise skidded and he played at an absolutely outrageous level. Frank Mackey tells the journalist about his family, his deceased father and his mother who lives somewhere in the city. But the journalist catches him in deception:"After all, your mother died ...". Tom's face in this scene is a story for a separate article ...  There is not a single unnecessary episode in Magnolia - there are no unnecessary puzzles in the mosaic. This is a story about different loneliness, connected or unrelated to other loneliness. Sometimes they collide with each other, and something called "life" comes out of it. Someone quarrels forever, others reconcile, someone dies, and some find love. Some forgive, others cannot forget.  Check out Magnolia if you haven't seen it yet. And you will revisit it many times.
