”Hyde Park on the Hudson” and the viewer who needs to be serious
Hyde Park on the Hudson has already earned the reputation of a complete failure and monstrous disgrace. Judging by the criticism of professionals and amateurs, it is not worth going to the cinema: it’s not so, and it’s not like that, sheer disappointment. In fact, everything is exactly the opposite: the picture is as wonderful as possible.It's even surprising how the criticism was lined up according to the geographical principle. The British, as if mocking themselves, were very offended by the way they are presented in the film: moreover, the director Roger Michell anticipated this indignation and made a lot of ironic about this. But the British can be understood: the relationship between the two nations has always been akin to the lingering dislike of an older brother, a prim loser, and a young, cheerful and impudent businessman. Hyde Park on the Hudson has enough time for this relationship.  The reaction of domestic film fans is of a completely different kind: both the United States and England are equally far from us, and, frankly, almost no one in USA can distinguish an Englishman from an American in accent, so this part of the picture completely fell out of sight of the tape's opponents. The dissatisfaction withmade in USAcomes down mainly to the fact that the main characters, the US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (amazing Bill Murray), who fell in love with his cousin Daisy (Laura Linney), and the King of the United Kingdom George VI (Samuel West), who arrived with his wife Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (Olivia Colman), I'm sorry, not serious ... The rulers of half of the world are joking and fooling around, well, how is it, they are not ashamed. But, the viewer is indignant, the world is on the verge of World War II. Thunderous Age, the most difficult period in the history of Europe, Britain must enlist the support of the United States, and Roosevelt, confined to a wheelchair, tells the stuttering George that the stamp collection is so, to enchant young ladies. They have a hot dog picnic tomorrow, which is outrageous.  The heroes are not at all ashamed. They are normal, this is the whole pathos of Hyde Park . Everything in the tape is very cute, touching, not without heavy awkwardness and dark night landscapes, of course, but they do not spoil the overall, very joyful mood. As if you can finally throw off the conventions and be people for several days - Western culture in general is extremely reverent about personal space and private life. Everyone has the right. However, it is not only this that is important. The important thing is that the ability to laugh at one's own seriousness is the only thing that distinguishes a man of civilization from a savage, whose every digging stick instantly turns into a cult object, and the fashion brought from somewhere is copied with such bestial seriousness that it is time to strangle oneself from shame. The British classic Oscar Wilde wrote about this better than anyone else, the title of his play is not accidentally put into the title: Wilde guessed unmistakably that the coming XX century would throw all these prim gentlemen into the dustbin - it happened, and we missed everything again, and now something how we catch up, but we can't make up for everything.  In general, if you want to understand why in USA every petty boss at any opportunity pretends to be the arbiter of destinies, and millionaires wander around Manhattan in jeans for $ 30, be sure to look Hyde Park on the Hudson . There are answers to all the questions you were afraid to ask. And, finally, one cannot fail to notice that George VI becomes the hero of feature-length films for the third time in a fairly short period of time.
