Pixels movie review. Pixelating Sandler

All of Adam Sandler's recent movies seem to follow one completely ineffective formula: the more stupid, the funnier. Therefore, it is not difficult to imagine in advance what the “ Pixels ” will be similar. Their only difference from the “ Pope Dosvidos ” or “ Odnoklassniki ” is that this time the events take an epic turn and Sandler and his team of pseudo-funny partners must save the whole world. And the only comment that begs for this is: if Sandler really turns out to be the last hope of humanity, our world is doomed in advance.

Since it was initially clear that this would be the next `` Sandler's movie '', then it's a shame that the idea of the movie could turn into a funny, an exciting adventure where the imagination of the creators would have no limit. An alien attack on Earth can in itself be considered a huge fat cliche, another question is how to turn this cliche upside down. The development of the plot "famous computer games attack the Earth" could go everywhere. Parody of `` Independence Day '', nostalgic action movie, family adventure, but at least a serious drama. However, instead of that, Chris Columbus ended up with a silly, unfunny, superficial script built around Sandler's persona, his friends and jokes that they can convey, but which the audience is no longer able to digest.

Sandler and his team of Kevin James, Josh Gad and Peter Dinklage are the culprit behind everything in “ Pixels ” does not work. They try to joke, but the humor comes out somehow completely childish, strained and awkward, so you really don't want to laugh. They play the role of action heroes (in the Western media it has become very popular to compare them with ghost hunters), but unfortunately, all their heroism is actually exhausted by the knowledge of outdated computer games (and in terms of complexion, they do not really pull on the saviors of humanity). They present themselves as experts, but at the same time they soon turn into screaming cretins, giving often obvious orders.

In general, the text written by Sandler and his favorite screenwriters had to be saved as Chris Columbus, who got involved in all this, and thanks to to him all this wild spectacle in places looks quite tolerable. The visuals are impressive and add the necessary dynamics, because without chases and shootings it would be just another comedy buddy movie (a movie about friends and pals). And so, due to Pacman shattering cars and buildings into pixels, the movie turned out to be at least watchable. And it is a pleasure to look at the sights crumbling like Lego cubes. The first half of the action flies forward cheerfully and purposefully, without wasting time (if you do not assume that the whole movie is one continuous waste of time) and without giving any of the main characters an obvious preference.

Unfortunately, the third act is already turning into a farce. `` Horses, people mingled in a heap, '' as the great classic would say. And by that moment you get tired of voluminous video games flickering before your eyes. For all the transience of the beginning, the end begins to seem drawn out if not boring. Music and that grows together into one endless howl, and from the pixels it dazzles at all.

In the end, everything turned out as always with the movies of Adam Sandler: loud, rich, stupid, with a couple of nominations for the “ Golden Raspberry ” in the bosom and buried behind the baseboard ratings of critics. So do not wait for Sandler's early return to the big screens: he, as a wise businessman, has already secured his future by signing a contract with the streaming service Netflix. Too bad that “ Pixels ” cannot be returned.
