Walk the string. Review of ”Kubo”
Not so rarely, but not often, someone brave takes on something difficult and creates something that can only be applauded while standing. As the song says: "I want to make one of two great cultures". Oh well. Well ... It worked after all. The key is who decides to engage in such a creative battle. If a samurai, then the case will surely work out.Travis Knight , director of the cartoon " Kubo ", is a samurai - from animation. A fan of Miyazaki and Kurosawa, the general director of the studio Laika Entertainment , faithful to the once chosen path, invariably pleases the discerning audience with his projects, whether he acts as a producer or a leading animator. But in the project “Kubo. The Legend of the Samurai " Knight took the director's chair for the first time, and, of course, he was at his best.  Once upon a time there lived in a cave above a village an unnamed disgraced daughter of the Moon King and her son, a little protagonist with disabilities and magical abilities. Yes, they did not just live, but hid. Only two rules had to be observed by Kubo : beware of going out into the swamps at night and everywhere carry a netsuke amulet, a wooden monkey. But - gave a blunder. Wicked killer witches with the grip of ninja appeared, sowing death and destruction, and our little hero in the snowy Far lands woke up with the last maternal command on his lips: “Find your father's armor. This is your only chance to survive. " The grown-up monkey-amulet takes over the guy's patronage and they, pursued by a couple of merciless aunts Kubo , go for armor: An indestructible sword, An impenetrable cuirass and an invulnerability helmet. A little later a giant upright beetle will join them.  It will be really funny, really scary and extremely beautiful - discreet, Zen beauty. Kubo will eventually gain armor, self, victory and a couple of cross-platform truths. All this action, of course, takes place in the space of the transmyth, where there are no differences between the eastern and western fairytale traditions. More precisely, they have not yet appeared there. Therefore, the film, based on classic Japanese legends and following more or less classic models of the country's cinematography, where the director spent his childhood, does not look like an ethnographic attraction, except just a little bit.  Fantasy beauties are almost everywhere universal, the USA folk “how long, how short ...” is heard behind every editing cut at the change of locations, and rock and roll also has no boundaries. The film turned out to be very “rock and roll” - delightfully unrhythmic, but full of hidden drive. The end credits feature a gorgeous " While My Guitar Gently Weeps " George Harrison. Powerful riffs on the shamisen, like magical acts, mark each of the three major dramatic events. And, finally, magic armor can be easily weaved out of the plot, because the main magic tool of the hero, his faithful "unkillable" shamisen, is with him from the very beginning, and the gift to create magic is attached to him in the manner of software. Magic is in the music of Kubo . It is clearthatexactly symbolize the two strings in the original film title. But when a real miracle is required, you can play one, if this string is a memory of the one you love.  "Kubo" is a family movie. Not Disney, but family - that's what we're talking about. Adult cinema. They will not lisp with children here, where it is not necessary, and in a two-second episode of cutting off the head of a paper chicken by a paper samurai, the authors will even joke exhaustively over age categories. “Too invented” episodes in the film are only two or three, no more, and the rest of the time it seems that everything really happened (and this makes it warm), while the higher matters are spoken of without falsehood. Nothing but the truth: true love is real power, and death ... “We do not leave at all. Like paper in the hands of Kubo , we change shape and continue to exist elsewhere. The end of one story is just the beginning of another”, the Monkey simply explains to his beloved Beetle and sitting in the hall. Equal respect of the authors for both young viewers and children over forty - this is the reason to go to "Kubo" with the whole family.  And further. “If you want to blink, do it now. Remember: if you miss even a word, even a moment, our hero will inevitably die”- somewhat discouraging intro motivates to turn off cell phones before the session much more than a request to turn off cell phones and the threat of arrest.
