On ”yo-ho-ho” no longer ho ... Review of the fifth ”Pirates”

Image Repetition is said to be the mother of learning. Judging by the fact that the fifth part of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has started in cinemas, the bosses of the studio Disney took the famous phrase as a guide to action. Johnny Depp needed to top up his bank account after his divorce from Amber Heard.

Once a thunderstorm of seas, oceans and women, captain Jack Sparrow lost everything that was dear to him. First he lost his ship "Black Pearl", then - luck, and as a result - the team. The Sparrow has only a life of its own, however, apparently, and this is not for long - the captain Armando Salazar has freed himself from his gloomy captivity. He and his loyal soldiers are determined to destroy anyone who has ever flown under the pirate flag, and Jack Sparrow is the first name on their list. The only salvation for Sparrow is to find the trident of Poseidon , because the possession of this semi-mythical artifact gives power over the World Ocean. However, the same trident was suddenly needed by the son of Will Turner ,
The fifth part of the pirate franchise was filmed by Espen Sandberg and Joaquim Ronning, who released the wonderful film "Kon-Tiki". Johnny Depp , Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom have returned to their roles. Ascendants - Kaya Scodelario and Brenton Thwaites. Honored - Javier Bardem and Paul McCartney.

The golden rule of Hollywood is known to be somewhat inconsistent with the golden rule of morality. About any "do not act with others as you do not want them to act with you" is out of the question. Only monetization, box office receipts measured in billions of dollars or, as in the case of Pirates , holds of gold doubloons.

The creators reasonably decided that at least half of the viewers will go to the new tape solely because of the hero Johnny Depp , so they made an attempt to expand the arc of the famous character. Expand through two directions at once - to tell about the beardless youth of the famous pirate and to place the hero in conditions when his eternal companion fortune turned away from her favorite. The rush is definitely not bad. At the planning stage, it is generally worthy of Dr. Freud's notes. But the implementation once again turned out to be more crumpled and cumbersome than verified and elaborated. Of course, demanding observance of the laws of high art from a blockbuster is nonsense, so at least an attempt deserves attention. However, if you turn around and look at the previous parts,

The very first scene with Sparrow in the new part turned out to be very symbolic. The famous pirate is robbing a new bank, however, while he leaves the pursuit, he begins to lose all the stolen money. If you really want to, here you can see a metaphor or a cruel joke associated both with the investments of the studio Disney in the next adventures of the pirate-antics, and with the personal life of the famous actor. It is unlikely that the producers had planned so, but the result came from the series "you can't imagine it on purpose".

But not Depp alone is the franchise alive. At different times, wonderful artists have appeared in the series - Bill Nighy, Ian McShane, Penelope Cruz. This time, the producers managed to drag Javier Bardem on board. And the trailers promised that the charismatic Spaniard, coupled with CGI graphics, will actually make a great antagonist. The graphics turned out, the antagonist did not. First, Javier was given too little time to roam. Secondly, the motivation of his hero - revenge, return of debts, extermination of pirates - somewhere we have already seen this. However, blockbuster, of course, is not the genre where it is customary to demand the creation of heroes according to the Stanislavsky system. And I would have seen Konstantin Sergeevich all this booth, perhaps, even his famous "I do not believe" did not say. I would just get up and leave the room.<

However, there are a few things to note about the actors in the new film. So, Hector Barbossa performed by Geoffrey Rush turned from a salted pirate into a pirating esthete - the first scene with his participation turned out to be one of the most impressive. In addition, Kaya Scodelario has performed well - this self-taught astronomer has much more drive and charge than Sparrow , tired of adventures and threats. Her heroine (in accordance with the popularity of "strong and independent") uses both the mind and the rapier, and also does not miss the opportunity to theatrically roll her eyes at the impenetrable stupidity of the surrounding men. And finally, a cameo by Paul McCartney . This is the best episode with the famous Beatle since Say Hello to Broad Street. And it looks much more organic McCartney , giving advice on choosing an executioner rather than Keith Richards, talking about the source of eternal youth.

During the viewing, it seems that the graphics for the film were created by two different teams. The first worked on Salazar and his ghost soldiers and made them visually stunning. This is one of the biggest benefits of the film. However, there was apparently a second team of CGI specialists. They were involved in, in particular, the design of shark skeletons. And this moment has been worked out just disgustingly. The mistakes are especially striking when compared with the soldiers of Salazar , because of this, the overall impression of the graphics deteriorates significantly.

There is a lot of good humor in the new tape, but humor has always been one of the strong points of the entire franchise. Separately, it is worth noting the exciting scene of the acquaintance of Sparrow with the guillotine and a very funny moment when the protagonist suddenly found himself at his own wedding. What was superfluous was the increased concentration of jokes below the belt. Most likely, the authors were guided by the fact that the children who watched the first part fourteen years ago have already grown up. If so, then this is a very dubious reason to introduce so much vulgarity and grossness. The audience appreciates good humor regardless of age.

The very same story in the fifth part is an incessant attraction, in which even dramatic moments are so far-fetched that they seem superfluous. If they were not included in the final cut, the viewing discomfort would be less. And the tape itself would be shorter. This time, it really takes much longer than the viewer needs. And editing ... In 1982, when Tony Scott was filming "Hunger", he applied the so-called clip editing. Then, many critics and viewers negatively perceived the rapidly changing angles and plans. Now this is the norm for any blockbuster. The creators of the fifth part did not reinvent any bicycles here either - they used what they had invented before them. But judging by the box office in the early days of the release, the audience doesn't mind too much.

The fifth "Pirates" is an attempt by the studio to return the spirit of the first part to the film series, when the audience was imbued with a new image of Johnny Depp , and the topic of piracy again became popular in cinema. And the actors from the first film and a similar plot structure act as a "support group" for this venture. However, it is impossible to enter the same river twice, even on the Black Pearl under the command of Captain Jack Sparrow . The new part, of course, will beat off its production budget, but it's time for producers to seriously think about where to go next. And for the franchise, the best option is either to fold the sails, or by hook or by crook to return Mount Verbinski to the director's chair. Otherwise, there is a great chance to thoroughly run aground or run into reefs.
