If this is the finale, then the choice of topic is clear: Miyazaki used to refer to Horikoshi as an idol, but now he has found some parallels between his and his life. This is how a children's cartoon about a boy who dreamed of building airplanes becomes the artist's life-affirming creative manifesto.  What the master has always been able to do is surprise. The great storyteller in " Wind " will make fans round their eyes that nothing wonderful is happening here: there is no magic, ghosts, dragons. Instead of magic - a fusion of childish romance and the cold mind of an engineer. Spells turned into numbers and graphics, and winged machines replaced fairy-tale creatures. Surreal scenes are found only in the dream of the protagonist, but there is nothing magical and there is nothing there, only naive dreams of airplanes and conversations with Count Caproni . By the way, he is also a real character: Giovanni Caproni - the pioneer of Italian aviation.  Eternal for Miyazaki , the theme of the struggle between the natural and the artificial - smooth lines and right angles, wing flaps and the heavy tread of a military boot - is experiencing a real collapse. Should a person fly? Does he have the right to go against nature, even if he learns from her? What price must be paid to achieve the previously impossible? Do the ends justify their means? The animator, as always, does not give clear answers, does not go into moralizing. Instead, he consistently shows the key stages of personality formation: look, analyze, think. This problem is intertwined with a very personal dilemma for the director of achieving an ideal, creating beauty. And in the pure childhood dreams of the hero, Beauty, Oscarwilde's, with a capital letter, is always a creative, light force.“Not a weapon of war, not a weapon of commerce. This is a wonderful dream ", says the aviator from the dream. The Mitsubishi prototype will fly perfectly if you don't have machine guns on it. Only in the realities of those times, Beauty with a capital letter turns into the beauty of Dostoevsky - it does not save the world, but kills and dies itself. But the creator must work on his plan, despite poverty, war, pain and despair. This is his cross, tragedy and glory. It is interesting that there is not a single purely comic character in the tape. All"freaks with a funny appearance"will necessarily reveal themselves, if not as personalities, then as well-written characters that influence the development of the plot and the formation of the hero. Only military officials and disgruntled investors are shown as an amorphous barking mass.  On the technical side, the cartoon, like all of Ghibli 's tapes, does its best to maintain the tone of the story. Modern viewers, accustomed in recent years to computer graphics, IMAX, 48 frames per second and other bells and whistles,"warm lamp"drawn picture will make you purr with satisfaction. And forget about the typical anime twitches when they show, say, an earthquake. Composer Joe Hisaishi's musical theme sets the right mood from the very beginning. The music lover's heart will be briefly warmed by Schubert's music playing from a lonely window in a gloomy Nazi city. And the well-read viewer will periodically delight in references to the works of Paul Valery and Thomas Mann.  Among the general harmony, the speech of the protagonist is strangely perceived by ear. Jiro speaks mainly in mean, low-emotional phrases. For the sake of curiosity, count how many times he responds to the expanded lines of other characters with a laconic“High”(Japanese“Yes”). On the other hand, how else should a shy nerd with glasses talk when starting a date with a girl with the words:"Well, I'll go"?  Miyazaki has turned out to be perhaps the oldest cartoon in his entire career. The creative path of a person takes ten years, according to the hero of “ Wind ”. The path Miyazaki is, of course, longer, but in this work the author unequivocally hints that he has come to a certain line."And what next?", - the heroes of the picture ask each other, the audience - the author, and he himself, for sure, - at home."Further - to live".
