Chinese director Zhang Yimou's drama Flowers of War, starring Christian Bale, will be nominated for an Oscar nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. This is reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie, formerly called Heroes of Nanjing, is the most expensive project in the history of Chinese cinema. Its budget is estimated at $ 94 million.

Christian Bale played an American missionary who rescues the inhabitants of the city from the massacre staged by the Japanese invaders.

Recall that in December 1937, the Japanese army occupied the city Nanjing, then the capital of China. In a few weeks, about 300 thousand civilians were killed, including women and children.

The few Europeans and Americans who remained in Nanjing, mostly from religious missions, tried to help the local residents. The so-called Nanjing Safety Zone, organized by them, saved the lives of at least 200 thousand Chinese.

Nominees for the 2012 Oscar will be announced on January 24, 2012. The awards ceremony itself will take place on February 26, 2012.
