Review of the movie Brest Fortress. Thank you goodbye

On June 21, 1941, three Soviet officers were engaged in everyday affairs in the Brest Fortress. Lieutenant Kizhevatov (Andrey Merzlikin) took pictures with his family, Commissioner Efim Fomin (Pavel Derevyanko) unsuccessfully traveled to take a train ticket to transport his family to his new duty station, Major Gavrilov (Alexander Korshunov), who went through two wars, talked with the political instructor about the panic mood " in the fortress about the war with the Germans. There was also a boy - a trumpet player from the regimental orchestra, who secretly smoked, loved the girl ... None of them knew that the next morning they would become the commanders of the last three pockets of resistance, and the boy would be the only connection between them, in the stone cauldron of the first object of attack by Hitler's troops in the USSR - Brest Fortress.

Igor Ugolnikov's production project is a USA-Belarusian movie" Brest Fortress "directed by Alexander Kott makes a powerful impression. He takes it for a living: almost all the screen time makes you worry not for someone in particular, but absolutely for all the on-screen characters who, each in their own way, go to the last feat. It makes you worry so that some cannot hold back the screams when `` our '' locally defeat the enemy, while others cannot hold back tears of desperate hopelessness.

Kott managed to perfectly convey the atmosphere of dumbfoundedness, the absurdity of the beginning of this terrible war - when only people, without any internal reasons, come with weapons in hand to kill other people.

" Brest Fortress " - not just a movie: it is a monument performed in movie. And it is no coincidence that it ends with a huge monument to the defenders of the fortress, installed on its ruins - in terms of its significance and impact, the movie is practically equal to that monument.

But this "monumentality" the movie - with all the power of the impact - weakens it as a work of art. To the authors of the Brest Fortress managed to show the unparalleled heroism of the defenders, to involve them in what was happening - but failed to tell the story of each or even one center of resistance in the fortress coherently.

The main problem of the "Brest Fortress" like a movie - between its individual bright episodes, logical connections are poorly written. Like three centers of resistance, headed by the three central characters of the picture, as if they are acting on different sectors of the front (although everything happens about the same on each one), so each of the episodes of their struggle seems to exist on its own.

From knowledge of the defense of the Brest Fortress - yes, but from the screen actions it is not clear why, for example, the defenders went on the attack, and did not defend , or why many of them surrendered to the Germans in the end. The plot with the lack of water seems strange when, against the background of perforated dead bodies, a boy appears on the shore and calmly washed himself in the river. The narrator's voiceover is intended to give coherence to the action, but his words are too mean and `` monumental '', to see behind them the living pain of a fortress defended by the last forces.

This is why the script is also a monument: for every "real"; the episode in it - too many explanatory words `` with meaning '', pronounced in a well-set voice. And this voice at the end simply crumples the stories of the commanders of the three hotbeds of resistance - the central characters of the movie, telling their lives and their deaths for them.

Spectacular part of the "Brest Fortress" given brilliantly. Here are the furious bloody melee, and the German `` stuff '' -junkers diving with a terrible howl, and sweeping away all the bombing, including dropping a gigantic two-ton bomb on the fortress, similar in effect to an atomic bomb.

Disadvantages of" monumentality " the movie, however, was reflected here: not a single battle was allowed to be documentary - as soon as the battle begins, heroically compassionate music turns on in the background, recalling the Tragedy and Dramaticity. It blurs the impression of excellently staged battle scenes with tanks, cannons, gunfights and blood splashes flying into the camera lens.

But even with some questions to the movie, `` Brest Fortress '' - the most powerful and impressive USA movie about the war over the past couple of decades. The movie makes a heavy impression, but ultimately fills with light feelings - pride, love and gratitude to our great-grandfathers and grandfathers, who were the first in Europe to stop the fascist colossus at the border of their homeland.
