Review of the movie Jasmine. American Tragedy 2013

Woody Allen, after a 10-year European tour, returned to the States for American domestic tragedies. Most commentaries on the movie note the similarity of the story he told in Jasmine to Tennessee Williams' play A Streetcar Named Desire. 1947, amended, respectively, for the social context of 2013. If we accept this version, then Woody Allen appears as a plagiarist and an awkward interpreter, camouflaging the original play in which dramatic tension rings like a tightly stretched string, to his usual farce, adding fuss and multiplying the number characters. Much the same thing happened with Match Point, an adaptation of American Tragedy. Theodore Dreiser. Will the new experience receive academic recognition and the status of the author's original script?

All viewers and reviewers are very complimentary about the performance of Cate Blanchett in the movie, and this fact is undeniable. Almost everyone with sympathy, or at least condescension, also perceives her heroine, who loses her habitually luxurious lifestyle, and after that her reason, turns out to be not hardy enough to live `` at the bottom '', although she is still far from the real bottom. However, no one even casually mentions that her husband (Alec Baldwin), a major financial fraudster, she herself handed over to the FBI in revenge for treason. So we sympathize, if we sympathize, not with a soft, pampered, helpless intellectual, but a rather vengeful and very pragmatic person in many respects. Alcoholic and medicinal, not to say narcotic, dependence and being in the sphere of her own dreams do not prevent her from adequately and quickly reacting to the appearance on the horizon of a promising politician with unlimited financial capabilities (Peter Sarsgaard).

And yet the character of Cate Blanchett does not fit well into everyday life, she is a thing in herself, with a romantic halo, even her pseudonym Jasmine breathes perfume and night fogs. And Kate herself, fortunately, did not dissolve in the Woodiallen farce, but plays her own drama. Refined, fatal, mysterious and talented, she gave Jasmine cosmic radiance and brought him, and with it the image of Allen himself, to a new dramatic height. What other fatal and talented blondes, engaged by Woody at least in recent years, did not succeed in so much - — Scarlett Johansson (`` Match Point '' "Sensation", "Vicky Cristina Barcelona"), Evan Rachel Wood ("Whatever happens"), Naomi Watts ("You will meet a mysterious stranger"), Rachel McAdams ("Midnight in Paris") , Greta Gerwig (Roman Adventures).

Jasmine is going through a difficult period of her life at her sister's (Sally Hawkins) house. Sally creates a good contrast for Jasmine, she is open, sociable, does not make a drama out of life, carefree like Mike Lee (`` Carefree ''), fragile like a teenager, but copes at the same time with her ex-husband (Andrew Dice Clay), constant boyfriend (Bobby Cannavale) and a temporary partner (Luis S.K.). Inviting the last stand-up comedian fits well with Allen's vision of his movies as a continuous sketch show. Woody leaves the actors a lot of space for improvisation on the set and juicy images, especially the background, the result not only and not so much of his directives as of the actor's spontaneity. Here Bobby Cannavale is especially bright, colorful in the style of Adriano Celentano and haircut in the latest fashion in 2013, like Gordon-Levitt in his directorial debut and Gyllenhaal in Captives.

Woody Allen has been firmly adhering to principle one movie a year. This is, perhaps, a somewhat artisan approach to creativity, however, all his life he has been shooting the same movie in different scenery, in different genres from intellectual auteur cinema to comedy of the absurd, with varying degrees of psychology, with different actors. in recent years on different continents. A movie about intellectual self-digging on the sidelines of "big" life, far from disasters, revolutions, deeds and volitional decisions. Sometimes, it seems, he still invites viewers to a kind of skit in the style of `` Everything you wanted to know about sex, but were afraid to ask '', although most have long been ill even with the stage of hot porn.

Still the Woody Allen brand is still relevant, and Woody draws more and more actors into his intellectual web, who perceive this experience as an honor and an almost necessary baptism, and viewers who, even not being his ardent fans, will surely find something intriguing and their own among his movies.

In " Jasmine ", as usual with Allen, a masterpiece soundtrack, classical and jazz, which takes almost more of the story itself. The movie is genre in format, but completely original and full of comic. And, again, with good acting.
