NBC has recruited a lead actor for its adaptation of the Hellblazer comic series, Constantine. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he will be British actor Matt Ryan.

"Constantine" focuses on occult scholar John Constantine, who is tested by faith and burdened by the sins of the past. Unexpectedly, he is entrusted with the role of defender of humanity from the gathering forces of darkness.

John is described as a Londoner, from a working-class family; a mysterious con man with a dark sense of humor, he is a detective with supernatural powers, and is currently worried about a young girl whose soul he could not save. Familiar with the dark underworld that exists in parallel with ours, Konstantin has been researching the dark arts since his teens. He independently learned spells, rituals, curses and witchcraft. The only person, a meeting with whom remains impracticable – or not yet feasible - the dream of Constantine – his mother, who died in childbirth. When Liv, the daughter of his deceased friend, is attacked by demons, Constantine defends her, and they form an alliance.

Daniel Tseron (Dexter's Justice) will write the script and David S. Goyer (Man of Steel) will executive produce. Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones) has been named director of the pilot.
