Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have found new uses for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headsets. According to BBC News, as part of a competition announced by Google, they created a self-propelled robot capable of moving on the surface of the moon.

With the help of special stereoscopic cameras and special software, the device will be able to broadcast television in real time. The robot's camera movements are synchronized with the Oculus Rift, which will be used by the operator on Earth, so researchers can literally "look around" on the Moon.

Video game designer Ben Bosel of Mojo Game Studios and Slippery Rock University Planetarium Director Dan Arnett contributed to the probe. The authors of the project intend to create a whole series of such devices in order to provide constant "access" to the Earth's satellite surface for many educational institutions.

The winner of the Google Lunax XPrize competition will not only receive a $ 20 million grant for further research, but will also be able to send his invention to the moon on SpaceX Falcon 9 at the end of 2015.

Note that Oculus Rift virtual reality helmets are increasingly being used not only in scientific but also in entertainment projects. Their capabilities will be in demand both by the gaming industry and cinematography. In particular, viewers will be able to watch the fantastic movie "Interstellar" using the Oculus Rift.
