Paramount Pictures has acquired the movie rights to Stephen Tutley's novel Black Hand, which tells the story of famed New York City police officer Joe Petrosino, who is best known for his uncompromising fight against Italian organized crime. This is reported by the publication Deadline.

Leonardo DiCaprio is expected to star in the movie, and the actor's studio Appian Way will be responsible for the shooting. At the time of this writing, the project does not yet have a scriptwriter or director.

Joe (Giuseppe) Petrosino was born in Italy, but at the age of 14 he ended up in the United States with part of his family. After the death of his grandfather, who was his guardian, Petrozino actually ended up on the street, but found shelter with one of the New York judges, who had left to decide his fate. This allowed the future hero to get a good education and join the police.

He knew the future President Theodore Roosevelt, under whom he served, and became the first American of Italian descent to head the murder investigation department of the New York Police Department. Petrosino considered the mafia a disgrace to the Italian nation and fought against it to the end of his days. His unit has many solved crimes, and thanks to Petrozino's activities, some of the mafia leaders were forced to leave the United States.

Joe Petrosino was killed in Palermo, where he came to collect information about mafia clans, in 1909.
