Google and Bing will fight pirates in the UK

The largest American search engines Google and Bing have signed a voluntary code agreed with the UK authorities to create barriers to searching for pirated content on the Web. This is reported by the British edition of The Guardian.

The package of measures was developed at the initiative of the Intellectual Property Office. Representatives of the Ministry of Culture, large media outlets and TV channels also took part in the preliminary discussions, which have been going on since the end of 2016.

The code, which will enter into force in the summer of 2017, is said to act on a par with the existing legislation protecting intellectual property. From now on, it will be much more difficult for British users to find sites on the Internet that distribute pirated content, including all kinds of torrent trackers.

The positions of such sites in the search results will be deliberately reduced on the basis of a complaint from copyright holders. This will greatly increase the likelihood that users will gain access to legal content in the first place.

Whether this practice will be extended to other countries and markets has not been specified at the time of this writing.
