HBO Will Not Preview Game of Thrones Season 6 to Press

In the upcoming sixth season of Game of Thrones, winter won't come until the end of April 2016, either for fans or for the press. For the first time since 2011, HBO will not be sending out episodes of the new season to critics and journalists ahead of the show. HBO Programming President Michael Lombardo confirmed the decision in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, in particular, saying: "This year we will not send copies to the press in any country in the world."

As a reminder, there was a leak last year into the network of the first four episodes of the series, containing many plot twists and deviations from the literary source. For example, the death of fan-favorite Ser Barristan Selmy (Ian McElhinney), who is still alive in the works of George R.R. Martin. HBO subsequently abandoned the practice of broadcasting DVDs and switched to a multi-stage password-protected digital preview format.

According to Lombardo, showrunners and lead writers for the series David Benioff and D.B. Weiss took the lead in this matter. "When you have a 'press copy', your friend inevitably asks you to borrow it. This is how it happens. We discussed the pros and cons of this situation. Many journalists are big fans of Game of Thrones and will surely be disappointed. But they will understand." - Lombardo is convinced.

Game of Thrones will return on April 24, 2016.
