NBC, Joel Silver (Goodfellas) and Lionsgate will collaborate on the drama Twist, based on the acclaimed novel by Charles Dickens, The Adventures of Oliver Twist. This is reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The script-commissioned drama is described as a modern take on Dickens's second novel, originally published in magazines in the 1830s. About Twist, it says: "The modern sexy version of The Adventures of Oliver Twist is about a twenty-year-old girl (Twist) who, after suffering, eventually finds a true family in a strange group of talented outcasts who use their unique abilities to overthrow rich criminals." p>

Chad Damiani and J.P. Lavin, those working on the script for the movie based on the game "Fruit Ninja" have been appointed as scriptwriters for the potential TV project. They will share executive producing duties with Silver and Silver Pictures Television president Rodney Ferrell.

In Dickens's novel, Oliver Twist, raised in an orphanage, is sold as an apprentice to an undertaker, from whom he eventually escapes and travels to London. There he meets a pickpocket named the Artful Dodger and the old and insidious criminal Feigin, who leads a gang of young pickpockets.

The latest adaptation of the novel is the 2005 movie by Roman Polanski, starring Barney Clarke (Twist) and Ben Kingsley (Feigin).
