Benedict Cumberbatch will star in the biopic "The War Magician", which will tell the story of the popular British illusionist Jasper Maskeline and his activities during the Second World War. This is reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Jasper Maskelyne came from a famous dynasty of magicians. From a young age he performed on stage and by the beginning of the 30s of the XX century was considered one of the most talented illusionists in the world. At the beginning of the war, Maskeline enlisted in the Royal Corps of Engineers, where he was developing advanced camouflage technologies. There is a legend that Maskeline was able to convince the command of his professional suitability by creating a convincing illusion of a German warship docked at one of the London berths.

The illusionist also served in the MI9 unit, whose task was to create portable devices that could help the prisoners of German prisoners to escape. It is also believed that Maskeline was one of the organizers of the grandiose operation to hide from the German air force Alexandria harbor, through which the Allied troops were transferred to North Africa.

However, many researchers question the merits of Maskelyne, claiming that most of his "exploits" are fiction, which he himself was the author of.

The project will be funded by Studio Canal. The shooting schedule has not yet been specified.
